Duties

These positions are located in Denali National Park and Preserve in the Maintenance Division. These positions are temporary and may not exceed 1039 hours (six months) in a service year. They may be terminated sooner or extended depending on management needs. The typical season for these positions is May - September, but varies during these months due to weather conditions, project needs, and/or funding. Anticipated Entry on Duty: May 2025. You must apply to each duty station you are interested in working at. Selectees may be moved between duty stations within park boundaries. Positions may not be filled at every duty station. Applicants selected for Denali County will be duty stationed at Wonder Lake, AK. Duties include but are not limited to the following: Operate a variety of motor vehicles, including those having a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of more than 32,000 pounds and towing trailers with a GVWR of greater than 10,000 pounds. Operate vehicles on steep grades, winding roads, and varied mountainous terrain. Vehicles primarily include tractor trailers and dump trucks (some with dual transmissions), operated within close tolerances, driving and backing over uneven ground and in narrow or congested areas and between buildings and other vehicles. Occasionally perform general laborer duties such as washing vehicles and equipment; cleaning with push brooms, wheelbarrows, shovels, and rakes; loading and unloading supplies by hand or with forklifts or loader; operating chainsaws; and repairing road shoulders and ditches by hand. Positions may require living and working out of a remote road camp for several days at a time. Physical Demands: Moderate to heavy physical effort in climbing on tractors to hook up service lines, lower landing gears, and in climbing on the trailer to load or tie down cargo. Considerable physical effort may be required in backing of vehicles, to change tires, and make limited emergency repairs. Required to frequently lift items weighing over 50 pounds. Climbing of ladders, scaffolding, and working in and around equipment and power tools. Working Conditions: Majority of the work is performed outdoors where incumbent will be exposed to extreme hot and cold temperatures. Required to operate equipment in all types of weather conditions and on a variety of road surfaces. Subject to noise, vibration and exhaust fumes from equipment and vehicles, and is exposed to the danger of serious accidents. Government housing may be available. You must meet the Selective Placement Factor(s)/Screen Out(s) below to qualify for the position and include the required information/upload the required documentation with your application to demonstrate your qualifications or you will receive no further consideration for these positions: You must possess and maintain a current, valid Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with tanker endorsements, no air brake restrictions, a current medical examiner's certificate, and no pending disqualifying offenses. You must include a copy of your current, valid CDL showing you have tanker endorsements and no air brake restrictions. (Ensure you upload the front AND back of your CDL.) If you already have a current medical examiner's certificate showing no pending disqualifying offenses, it must be uploaded at the time of application, otherwise, if selected, you will be required to submit the medical examiner's certificate with no disqualifying offenses by the anticipated entrance on duty in this announcement. In addition to the above, to qualify for this position, you must have sufficient knowledge and ability in the following job-related factors: Ability to do the work of a Motor Vehicle Operator, WG-5703-08 without more than normal supervision. (SCREEN OUT) Operation of Motor Vehicles Work Practices (includes keeping things neat, clean, and in order) Ability to Interpret Instructions, Specifications, etc. (related to mobile equipment operation) Ability to Drive Safely (Motor Vehicles) Ability to Operate Safely (Non-Motor Vehicle) Reliability and Dependability as Motor Vehicle Operator If your knowledge and ability in the SCREEN OUT factor above is not sufficient, you will receive no further consideration. Education
