Duties

Provides scientific and technical supervisory leadership, advice, direction, and oversight for all aspects of the biological testing programs managed by the BTB, including furnishing policy and procedural guidance to staff. Implements DTP objectives in oversight of the in vivo evaluation of candidates for clinical cancer therapy. Manages the national tumor repository program. Assigns general authority for the correlation of all aspects of testing, tumor repository into an efficient in vitro/in vivo screening program. Reviews in vivo xenograft and syngeneic model data. Recommends for each compound tested the medical and scientific value of efficacy and its use in furthering research. Prepares and directs the preparation of papers for publication in scientific journals or presentation at meetings of scientific societies. Collaborates with NCI scientists to evaluate the in vivo efficacy of their test agents, both synthetic, biologic, or natural product derived. Presents lectures or participates in seminars for universities or scientific groups. Oversees the quality of the animals used for the BTB in vivo studies.

Qualifications

Basic Education Requirement: In order to meet the Basic Requirement for a Supervisory Biologist (Animal), GS-0401, you must possess a bachelor's (or graduate) degree in a biological science, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to this position, from an accredited college or university; OR Have a combination of experience and education which includes courses comparable to a major in a biological science, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry or related disciplines appropriate to this position, AND appropriate experience or additional education which demonstrates similarly appropriate skills or abilities needed to perform the duties of this position. Additional Specialized Experience Requirement: In addition, in order to qualify for a Supervisory Biologist (Animal) position at the GS-15 level, you must demonstrate in your resume at least one (1) year of qualifying specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-14 level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: formulates, plans, and evaluates program objectives, policies, and activities for research projects and studies involving developmental therapeutics research and biological testing programs; designs, develops, and coordinates the design of models for in vivo testing; develops new assay methodologies to analyze anti-tumor agents; prepares papers for publication in scientific journals; presents lectures in seminars for scientific groups as a recognized authority; oversees the quality of animals used for scientific studies; and manages a scientific repository program. You will receive credit for all experience material to the position, including experience gained in religious, civic, welfare, service, and organizational activities, regardless of whether you received pay.
