About the Position: Fort Drum, the home of the 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry), is located in Northern New York, a historically unique and geographically beautiful area, offering bountiful outdoor recreational opportunities from hunting and fishing to winter sports of all types.

Duties

Responsible for the receipt and effective evaluation of 911 emergency calls. Identify the determinant and level of response and provides this and any additional information to the responding units. Transfer caller to proper agency as determined or dispatches a variety of emergency equipment to include police, fire, ambulance rescue or hazardous materials units. Provide emergency medical dispatching (EMD) assistance to callers with medical emergencies using the local authority's emergency medical dispatch system. Update information for medical, police and fire personnel enroute to call. Provide assistance to medical, police and fire personnel by acting as liaison between department personnel and other agencies.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Incumbent is required to work (mission essential) regardless of weather conditions or base closure and to report to the duty station at the regularly scheduled time.
  • Incumbent may be required to wear a uniform.
  • Incumbent must pass a pre-employment; fingerprint based criminal history investigation for any location that accesses Criminal Justice Information Systems.
  • The incumbent is required to obtain and maintain a valid state driver’s license.
  • Incumbent must complete the Department of Defense Telecommunicator I and II or equivalent based on the program standards at the location assigned.
  • Incumbent must complete State National Crime Information Center (NCIC) certification based on assigned location.
  • Incumbent must complete the National Incident Management System (NIMS) IS 100,300, 700, 800, and 907 courses.
  • Continuous current certification is a condition of employment.
  • The incumbent is responsible for attaining continuing dispatch education (CDE) requirements through in-service training that is offered locally and pass in accordance with predetermined course requirements.
  • The incumbent is required to obtain and maintain certification in: Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR). Emergency Medical Dispatch based on the program standards at the location assigned.
  • Position is subject to shift work where the incumbent is required to work an alternate, rotating work schedule, which requires an uncommon tour of duty (including nights, weekends and holidays).
  • Within 16 weeks from the date of employment, employee will be required to demonstrate reasonable proficiency at locally established training guidelines on the use of E911, CAD, Land Mobile Radio (LMR), and station alerting software and equipment.

Qualifications

Who May Apply: US Citizens In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes 1) Answering emergency and/or non-emergency calls for police, fire, or ambulance assistance; 2) Dispatching emergency personnel as needed in accordance with priority level procedures; and 3) Operating communications software to perform dispatching duties such as: log calls, prepare reports of activities, and assist with medical dispatching until appropriate emergency units arrive. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06). Proficiency Required: This position requires a qualified typist. A qualified typist can type 40 words per minute based on a 5-minute sample with three or fewer errors.
