Duties
Major Duties:
This is the position of a Biological Science Technician performing resource protection duties in the National Parks.
This position will implement and monitor established natural resource management projects by following instructions and standard procedures. The Biological Science Technician will provide advice, assistance, and training to interns, students, volunteers and employees involved in resource management projects and field research. This position works closely with park resource managers and scientists and will provide information to other employees and visitors about the natural resource management program. This position may serve as an Agreement Technician Representative (ATR). Boat operator experience is not required to apply but on-site training will be required if hired for the position.
Area Information:
Situated on the United States-Mexico border, Amistad National Recreation Area is known primarily for excellent year-round water-based recreation including boating, fishing, swimming, scuba diving. and water-skiing. Amistad NRA also provides opportunities for picnicking, camping and hunting. Amistad Dam created the reservoir, at the confluence of the Rio Grande, Devils and Pecos rivers, in 1969. In addition to excellent recreation, this area is rich in archeology and rock art, and contains a wide variety of plant and animal life. Headquarters is located in Del Rio, Texas, population 35,000. Del Rio offers all amenities. The nearest cities of any size are San Angelo (150 miles), Laredo (180 miles, and San Antonio (153 miles). This part of South Texas has sunny, humid and hot summers and mild winters. July and August are the hottest months with average high temperatures in the mid-90's and overnight lows in the 70's. Coolest months are December and January when average lows are around 40 degrees. GOVERNMENT HOUSING IS NOT AVAlLABLE. Houses for sale and rent are available in Del Rio as well as the surrounding communities.
Qualifications
All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-12/20/2024-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement.
Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. For current Federal employees, if hours worked per week are not included on your resume, you must submit a non-award SF-50 as part of your application to be used to validate your work schedule and determine the amount of specialized experience that you will be granted. An award SF-50 will not be acceptable documentation for which to consider your amount of qualifying experience. For all other applicants who are not current federal employees, your resume must state either "full-time" (or "40 hours a week") or "part-time" with the number of hours worked per week to ensure proper crediting of specialized experience.
For periods of time that reflect military service, the DD-214 or Statement of Service is sufficient to meet the full and/or part-time hours requirement as the service dates will be reflected.
EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-07 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). This experience includes activities such as: applying an understanding of issues related to resource management; participating in planning projects and making decisions on the methods and procedures to be used, as well as improving, adapting, or developing techniques, procedures, or equipment. Assists higher level specialists/technicians in utilizing various techniques to gather biological samples. You must include hours per week worked.
Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
