The primary purpose of this position is to serve as a Design Team Member performing design duties in support of the Trainer Development Flight. Incumbent is a member of a design team, which may consist of engineers, drafters and planners from a variety of disciplines and technical staff on complex trainer fabrication, modification and training aid multi-phase projects assigned to 82d Training Support Squadron, Trainer Design & Development section.
Duties
Serves as a member of a design/drafting team for all assigned projects; coordinates activities through appropriate officials.
Resolves issues for work orders requiring the application of practical design and drafting ingenuity and knowledge.
Complies with health, safety, and environmental rules and procedures and performs work in a safe, environmentally conscious manner.
Keeps current in relevant software applications. Uses computers/computer software such as information management programs, computer aided design and drafting (CADD) programs, and project tracking programs to solve design problems, track drafter's work and report progress to the customer and engineering supervisor.

Qualifications
In order to qualify, you must meet the specialized experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards for General Schedule Positions, Technical and Medical Support Positions, Engineering Technical Series 0802.
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Applicants must have at least one (1) year of specialized experience at the next lower grade GS-10, or equivalent in other pay systems. Examples of specialized experience includes professional knowledge and abilities applicable to a wide range of mechanical engineering duties; ability to modify standard practices and adapt equipment or techniques to solve a variety of problems; ability to adapt precedents or make significant departures from previous approaches to similar projects in order to provide for the specialized requirements of some projects; and ability to apply the standard practices of related engineering disciplines as they relate to engineering design. Knowledge of a full range of the standard principles, practices, and techniques of multi-discipline engineering to independently identify, consider, and resolve difficult issues and/or problems of a procedural of factual nature. Knowledge of the mechanics of machine or equipment design and maintenance; and techniques to modify dimensions, shapes or clearances specified in designs.
FEDERAL TIME-IN-GRADE (TIG) REQUIREMENT FOR GENERAL SCHEDULE (GS) POSITIONS: Merit promotion applicants must meet applicable time-in-grade requirements to be considered eligible. One year at the GS-10 level is required to meet the time-in-grade requirements for the GS-11 level. TIG applies if you are in a current GS position or held a GS position within the previous 52 weeks. NOTE: Applicants applying as VEOA candidates who are current GS civil service employees or are prior GS civil service employees within the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas:
1. Knowledge and ability to apply a broad range of symbols and terminology to mechanical design concepts, principles, and practices, and extensive familiarity with mechanical, hydraulic, refrigeration, pneumatic, and engineering standards, methods, practices, and techniques, materials, and equipment demonstrated over a two year period.
2. Knowledge and skill to make detailed engineering discipline calculation in designing components, parts, subassemblies and entire assemblies to effectively and efficiently meet customer established requirements; knowledge and ability to review drafting performance of automated data processing concepts including economic and effective use of 3 dimensional designs, orthographic projections or other print formats of the correct discipline.
3. Knowledge ability to review and apply environmental principles, practices, procedures, laws, regulations, and current directives to engineering concepts demonstrated in at least two disciplines of engineering design.
4. Skill in utilizing automatic design and drafting computer software such as AutoCad and the ability to convert path layout to such programs as but not limited to Drawing Exchange Format (DXT) to enable fabrication equipment duplication.
5. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and written, in both formal and informal situations and maintain good working relations; ability demonstrated over a two year period to review sometimes inadequate or typically not applicable commercial manufacturers data and specifications and apply theory, make mathematical calculations to mechanically engineer prototype and unique one of a kind training equipment for the training laboratory.
6. Ability to plan, designs, conduct and record projects and perform incremental quality performance inspections at the full engineer level for a period of at least one year or equivalent in such disciplines as facilities HVAC design, fire suppression design, industrial equipment design or aeronautical engineering.
PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.
