Duties

This position is located at the Clement J. Zablocki VA Medical Center, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in the Rehabilitation, Extended, and Community Care (RECC) Division, Rehabilitation Services Program, Physical Therapy Section. The primary purpose of the Health Technician position is to provide clerical and administrative support duties, and assist professional staff in the care and treatment of patients. Major Duties: Works as part of the Lymphedema care team under the guidance and direction of a Physical Therapist. Performs clerical work in support of the care and treatment given to patients (i.e. maintains patient files, receives patients, etc.) Receives and responds to unclear inquiries from patients concerning a variety of medical, personnel, and administrative matters. Maintains various patient or administrative records for the clinic. Promotes patient participation in therapeutic community by fostering increased self-reliance and independence. Coordinates information and actions relating to patient care and services. Relays information and requests from patients to the treatment team and within the treatment team. Receives and processes patients for assessments and outpatient treatment and makes patient appointments. Under the direct supervision and guidance of a physical therapist, assists with or renders a course of treatment based on the assessed needs of the patient, developing progressive types of physical therapy treatment programs. Motivates patients and family members to participate in treatment plans and comply with indicated regimens and post-discharge activities. Under guidance and direction of a PT, removes dressing from patient, cleans area, and re-wraps area after treatment is completed by a PT. Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 12/06/2024. You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below:. You will be rated on the following Competencies for this position: Specialized Experience: Must have at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade (GS-4) in the Federal Service that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the Health Technician. Specialized experience is experience that required application of the knowledge, methods, and techniques related to the position and includes, but is not limited to: interpreting physical therapist orders for treatment plans. Performing technical support work involving the treatment, instruction, and working with veterans in carrying out therapeutic activities prescribed for their physical or mental rehabilitation. Knowledge of proper body mechanics, lifting techniques, and use of mechanical patient transfer devices. Knowledge of changes associated with aging and the principles of growth and development relevant to the adult and geriatric patient groups. Assessing and interpreting data about patient statues to identify patient needs. Skill in interpersonal relations and appropriately and courteously relating to internal and external customers. Performing a full range of standard clerical assignments and resolving recurring problems. OR Education: Must have successfully completed a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree, with major study or at least 24 semester hours in subjects directly related to the position. This education must have been obtained in an accredited business or technical school, junior college, college or university for which high school graduation or the equivalent is the normal prerequisite. (TRANSCRIPTS REQUIRED) OR Combination: Must possess equivalent combinations of successfully completed post-high school education that includes courses directly related to the work of the position and specialized experience to meet total experience requirements. Only education in excess of the first 60 semester hours is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirement. One full academic year of study (i.e. 30 semester hours) beyond the second year is equivalent to 6 months of specialized experience. (TRANSCRIPTS REQUIRED) ClericalInterpersonal SkillsPatient Care Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. Physical Requirements: The work is partially sedentary. Typically the employee sits comfortably to do the work. Part of the job assignment/ work requires the assistant to spend part of the tour on his/her feet with moderate amounts of walking, bending, pushing, pulling and occasional moderate to heavy lifting. The individual may be required to be on the hands and knees position to assist in mat activities with patients. Occasional moderate to heavy lifting may be required on a daily basis.
