A Physical Therapy Supervisor demonstrates autonomy in performing supervisory responsibilities by assigning work to employees, monitoring workload and clinical volume, reviewing work of employees to assure accuracy and validity of submissions, assuring adequate clinical staffing, imposing disciplinary measures, and monitoring clinical privileges. The Supervisor provides overall clinical supervision that assures the proper coordination and delivery of care within the facility.

VA Careers - Physical Therapy: https://youtube.com/embed/Gi2hoFqIoqY The duties of this occupation include, but are not limited to the following: Develop and initiate treatment programs which apply current Physical Therapy practice and research findings as needed or indicated by the patient population being served. Read and interpret written consults/prescriptions. Document appropriately and in a timely manner in patient's electronic record. Provide patient/family education as needed. Assign and supervise subordinate Physical Therapy staff, trainees, and volunteers in the delivery or support of treatment and education to patients and caregivers. Promote a safe, clean, and well-organized environment for patients and staff. Attend continuing education courses and seminars to remain current with advances in the field and to meet continuing education requirements of VA CT Healthcare System and Connecticut State Licensure. Provide education and training to PM&R and other facility staff as directed. Attend PM&R education and training sessions (in-services) as required. Actively participate in student training as required following standards set forth by the American Physical Therapy Association and VA. Work with PM&R leadership to develop Performance Improvement (PI) monitors in care of the Orthopedic patient. Participate in PI data collection, peer reviews, and preparation of reports in accordance with VA and The Joint Commission guidelines. Schedule patient visits to ensure quality Physical Therapy treatments are delivered most efficiently and effectively. Document evaluations, goals, treatment plans, and rehabilitation potential, using standard format in patient's medical record as required by PM&R, The Joint Commission, and VA CT Healthcare System standards. Ensures that subordinate Physical Therapy staff and trainees maintain appropriate documentation. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. English Language Proficiency: Individuals appointed under authority of 38 U.S.C. chapters 73 or 74, to serve in a direct patient-care capacity in VHA must be proficient in written and spoken English. Education and Experience: The individual must meet at least one of the requirements below: Bachelor's degree in Physical Therapy AND five (5) years of progressively independent experience as a physical therapist. OR Master's degree in Physical Therapy AND two (2) years of progressively independent experience as a physical therapist. OR Doctorate degree in Physical Therapy. Licensure: Individuals must hold a full, current, and unrestricted license to practice physical therapy in a State, Territory or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Grandfathering Provision: May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). Grade Determinations: GS-13 Supervisory Physical Therapist- Applicants must meet the Experience and all KSA's as stated below. Experience: In addition to meeting the basic requirements, one year of progressively complex experience equivalent to the GS-12 grade level. Examples of this experience include but are not limited to the following: Independently providing assessment and treatment interventions to inpatients and outpatients received through healthcare provider referrals and patient self-referrals; perform examinations and evaluations of individuals who have or may develop impairments, activity limitations, and participation restrictions; interpret findings from examination, diagnostic studies/medical tests and, during evaluation, select appropriate clinical tests and measures, and then integrate findings into the physical therapy plan of care for the full range of patient populations; establish a diagnosis within the scope of physical therapy and identify the appropriate intervention to treat and/or refer to another provider ; practice autonomously, making recommendations and referrals to other medical specialties/services as clinically indicated during ongoing assessment of patients under their care and develop and provide individualized clinical training experiences for physical therapy students. Demonstrated KSA's: In addition, the candidate must demonstrate all the following KSAs. 1. Knowledge of contemporary physical therapy across multiple areas of practice, and the demonstrated ability to apply this knowledge to provide clinical guidance to Staff PTs within the department. 2. Knowledge of human resources administration, including such functions as the ability to interview and select qualified applicants, monitor and evaluate performance, and maintain effective labor management relations within scope of responsibility. 3. Ability to effectively supervise, direct, and manage a diverse physical therapy staff. 4. Skill in forging positive interpersonal relationships and conflict resolution. 5. Ability to analyze clinically appropriate data effectively to optimize quality, performance, and productivity within the section. 6. Ability to set priorities, delegate tasks, and solve problems in order to meet multiple deadlines and identify/address organizational problems. 7. Ability to manage advocacy roles and planning activities within the VA and the greater rehabilitation community. Preferred Experience: Practicing Physical Therapy for greater than 5 years. Leadership experience, leadership training, procedure development experience , clinical instruction and team building experience. Physical Requirements: The work requires regular and recurring physical exertion such as standing or walking for prolonged periods of time, frequent bending, reaching, stooping, and stretching, lifting, pushing or pulling. The work may require specific physical characteristics and abilities such as above average agility, visual acuity, and dexterity to perform therapy procedures.
