You will serve as a HEAVY MOBILE EQUIPMENT MECHANIC in the PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT of NAVFAC SOUTHWEST.
Duties
You will determine malfunctions with mobile equipment to make repairs or replace defective parts.
You will inspect and diagnose heavy mobile equipment to verify maintenance service needed.
You will use precision measuring instruments for testing or inspecting mechanical systems.
You will determine suitable action when modifications are required for heavy mobile equipment readiness.
You will test functionality of heavy mobile equipment after all repairs are complete.
Requirements
- Must be a US Citizen.
- Must be determined suitable for federal employment.

- You will be required to obtain and maintain a current valid United States driver’s license.
- You will be required to obtain and maintain a current Class B Commercial Drivers' license with P (passenger), N (tank), and T (trailer) endorsements for operations of a field maintenance vehicle.
- You will be required to successfully complete a pre-appointment physical examination.
- You will be required to obtain and maintain an interim and/or final security clearance prior to entrance on duty. Failure to obtain and maintain the required level of clearance may result in the withdrawal of a job offer or removal.
- This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.

This job has a screen-out element which will be used to determine minimum eligibility for this job. Applicants who do not receive a minimum of two points on the screen-out element(s) will be found ineligible. The Screen-out Element for this position is: 1) Making independent judgments and decisions regarding heavy mobile equipment work to be done and complete repairs and adjustments in accordance with manufacturers' specification, service bulletins, and accepted trade practices; 2) Interpreting and applying manufacturers' repair manuals and technical specifications, schematics and engineering drawings, diagnostic codes, computer printouts, and safety manuals of heavy mobile equipment; and 3) Determining how far major components (of heavy mobile equipment) should be torn down, what parts and mechanisms can be reworked and refitted or should be replaced with new parts, and the type and extent of adjustment and alignment required.
