Duties

Collection, analysis, and evaluation of surface and groundwater quality and quantity data. Assist with resource inventory and monitoring. Evaluate data, identifies trends in movement of water and any known contaminants, as well as trends in lotic and lentic system functionality and conditions.

Graduate level education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position. FOR GS-07: In addition to the individual occupational requirements, you must possess one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-05 level that is equivalent in difficulty and complexity as indicated by the following examples: Ability to serve as a project member contributing to larger studies. Applies a range of established hydrologic techniques or procedures. Collect, interpret and analyze hydrologic data. Carry out moderately complex assignments in accordance applicable authorizations, policy and regulatory requirements. Contributes to team efforts to implement landscape-level projects to restore watersheds, improve water quality, and protect federal water rights. Performs a range of standard tests to determine the chemical and/or biological components of water samples. Follows standard protocols and procedures in accordance with published guidance and local procedures. -OR-1 year of graduate-level education or superior academic achievement. Superior Academic Achievement (See OPM's General Policies, Application of Qualification Standards Section 4.f.) S.A.A. must have been gained in a curriculum that is qualifying for the position to be filled .-OR-Combination of Education and Experience: You have less than the full amounts of both experience and education as described above which, when combined, are equivalent to the full requirement. (To compute, first, determine your experience as a percentage of the experience required; then determine your education as a percentage of the education required. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100%). Official transcripts must be provided to support this. Physical Demands: The work is performed both in the office and in the field. The work is performed in the field and requires walking, bending, climbing, and possibly standing in creek bottoms or slippery streambeds. Work Environment: The work is performed both in the office and in the field where the incumbent is subjected to varying climate conditions while performing work on steep/rocky terrain and/or in slippery streambeds. The incumbent will conduct field work across rugged terrain, carry personal and technical field equipment, and withstand inclement weather conditions.

Education

Basic Requirements:

1. Degree: physical or natural science, or engineering that included at least 30 semester hours in any combination of courses in hydrology, the physical sciences, geophysics, chemistry, engineering science, soils, mathematics, aquatic biology, atmospheric science, meteorology, geology, oceanography, or the management or conservation of water resources. The course work must have included at least 6 semester hours in calculus (including both differential and integral calculus), and at least 6 semester hours in physics. Calculus and physics, as described above, are requirements for all grade levels.

2. Combination of education and experience -- course work as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

Evaluation of Experience: Acceptable experience must have included performance of scientific functions related to the study of water resources, based on and requiring a professional knowledge of related sciences and the consistent application of basic scientific principles to the solution of theoretical and practical hydrologic problems. The following is illustrative of acceptable experience: field or laboratory work that would require application of hydrologic theory and related sciences such as geology, geo-chemistry, geophysics, or civil engineering to making observations, taking samples, operating instruments, assembling data from source materials, analyzing and interpreting data, and reporting findings orally and in writing. In some cases, professional scientific experience that is not clearly water resource experience may be acceptable if such experience was preceded by appropriate education in hydrology or by professional hydrology experience.

Applicants with related experience in hydrology gained through earlier Federal Government employment might have gained that experience in one or more occupational series. Such series include Soil Conservation, GS-457; Forestry, GS-460; Soil Science, GS-470; Civil Engineering, GS-810; Chemistry, GS-1320; Meteorology, GS-1340; and Geology, GS-1350. Comparable non-Federal experience may be given similar credit.
