Duties

Incumbents to this position will be required to use a variety of hand and power tools to perform trail repair and construction work. Tools included are jackhammers, chainsaws, gas-powered drills, picks, rock-bars, hammers, shovels, and various other hand and power tools.
Major Duties:
Performs general labor duties in maintenance and repair of backcountry and frontcountry trails to include: cleaning drains and water diversions, benching out trail tread, making crush fill, hauling dirt, mixing concrete and mortar, moving stones, logs, and other materials associated with trail laboring.
Assists in building a variety of frontcountry and backcountry trail structures such as stone causeways, log turnpikes, log cribbing, stone retention walls, stone liners, log and stone waterbars, rip-rap, and log and stone checks.
Patches and repairs sections of broken asphalt trails, and shovels snow from sidewalks, steps and paved trails, and assist with construction of paved asphalt trails such as moving and grading hot mix asphalt, compaction of asphalt, shouldering, installing stone liners, and edge tamping.
Will live and work from remote backcountry settings often living in a spike camp or in a bunk house sharing quarters in close proximity with a diverse work group for extended periods of time, and must be able to hike to remote settings and jobsites often hiking 5-7 miles per day.
Will operate a motor vehicle transporting tools and materials to jobsites and trailheads.
Area Information:
The North Rim District is situated on the rim of the Grand Canyon amidst the vast public lands of the Arizona Strip. It is about 20 miles from the South Rim by a strenuous hike through the Grand Canyon or a 215 mile drive which takes approximately 4 hours. The nearest community with full range of services is located in Kanab, UT approximately 80 miles from the North Rim. The elevation on the North Rim is about 8,200 feet and consequently the climate in the summer is mild with highs in the 80's and lows in the 50's. Between May 15 and October 15 the North Rim receives approximately 500,000 visitors. The North Rim has a robust concession operation which features a historic full service lodge with accommodations serving around 500 visitors, 230 concession employees, a general store, post office, mule ride concession, gas station, campground, etc. Beyond the North Rim Village the district has about 20 miles of paved scenic roads, 80 miles of high clearance 4 wheel drive roads, and hundreds of miles of trails/routes including immediate access to the North Kaibab Trail/cross-canyon corridor.
Recreational opportunities include hiking, running, climbing, canyoneering, rafting, road/mountain biking, skiing, and numerous other options in nearby communities such as St. George, Utah and Page, Arizona. Zion National Park, Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, Vermillion Cliffs National Monument, and Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument are all within a half day drive. Employees are assigned quarters, possibly shared, in a cabin, apartment, or house
Qualifications
To qualify for this position, you must have sufficient knowledge and ability in the following job-related factors:
Ability to perform Laborer (Trails- MVO), WG-3502-04 work without more than normal supervision (SCREEN OUT)
Work Practices (including keeping things neat, clean, and in order)
Ability To Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment
Ability To Interpret Instructions, Specifications, etc. (other than blueprints)

To be found minimally qualified, your resume must show the following: I am able to perform the full range of laborer work under normal supervision. I have basic maintenance or construction skills and/or informal training in trail maintenance/ construction, asphalt paving or repair, concrete pouring or repair. I also can drive a motor vehicle in support of work operations.
