About the Position: Serves as a Transportation Assistant (OA) within Surface Deployment and Distribution Command(SDDC). The 842nd Transportation Battalion is located on the Port of Beaumont, managing 5 strategic seaports and 13 alternate seaports along the Gulf of Mexico and the Pacific.
Duties
Control carrier deliveries of shipments to terminals, manage railcar movements, and documentation functions for cargo destined for locations outside the continental United States (CONUS).
Receive shipment information from carriers, shippers, and Government agencies.
Classify and rate a variety of commodities, determining commodity or class rate description, selects the proper classification and authority, and issue Government bill of lading/commercial bill of lading for a wide variety of overseas destinations
Analyze a variety of computer-generated reports for accuracy to determine correction areas, causes of errors, inconsistencies and other data discrepancies.
Provide administrative support to the Traffic/Cargo Management Division.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Secret security clearance or access for the duration of employment. A background investigation and credit check are required.
- This position has a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of 25% of the time.
- The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles.
- Incumbent must possess the ability to drive distance, position requires driving to U.S. Customs offices.
- Work involves walking, standing, climbing on uneven surfaces and in adverse weather conditions on the piers, holding areas, and aboard ships serviced by the Company.
- This position requires pre-employment financial disclosure OGE-450 and annually thereafter in accordance with DoD Directive 5500-7-R to assist agencies and employees to avoid conflicts between duties and financial interest.
- Appointment to this position is subject to a one year probationary period unless previously completed. While probationary the incumbent can be terminated with limited appeal rights.

In order to qualify, you must meet the specialized experience requirements described below. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: 1) Selection of modes of transportation for different types of freight; 2) Determining costs of freight shipments; AND 3) Preparation of shipment documents 4) Documenting and handling hazardous material for shipments. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06).
Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
Proficiency Required: This position requires a qualified typist. A qualified typist can type 40 words per minute based on a 5 minute sample with three or fewer errors.
