This position is established to provide a meaningful work opportunity in the Maintenance Worker/Mechanic, WG-4749, occupation. The employment opportunity may involve specific work assignments and a variety of assignments, and working with intermediate and journeymen level staff in support of office programs and activities to gain practical work experience.

Duties

Performs entry level carpentry repairs using simple measures and hand tools on such tasks as replacing broken planks on picnic tables, repairing siding or wooden benches with nails, reapplying/repairing molding, or installing shelving, signage, or items like waysides. Repairs minor wood structures, such as park benches, waste baskets, and signs. Uses circular or hand saw to make straight and routine cuts. Work is supervised throughout completion. Assists with removing structures. In performing this work the incumbent typically uses simple measuring devices such as tape measures and squares; and hand and power tools such as hammers, bars, handsaws, screw drivers, and skill saws. Performs simple operational maintenance on heating, venting and air conditioning equipment by cleaning out condenser tubing, cleaning the cooling tower, inspecting, and replacing filters. Replaces toilet seats, installs soap and paper towel dispensers, unplugs sinks and toilets using a plunger. Assists in planting, transplanting, fertilizing, mulching, watering, and pruning under specific instructions and under supervision. Cleans and prepares buildings, walls, trim, and floor surfaces for painting by sanding, scraping, or wire brushing. Performs touch-up painting on tools and equipment, wood, or metal surfaces. Stains slats in park benches or on waste baskets. Paint's garbage cans, gates, signposts, and other features. Inspects, maintains, and replaces light bulbs in a variety of fixtures both inside and outside. Incumbent removes damaged portions of walls or other similar architectural features in preparation for repair of damage. Performs elementary patch work on small holes in buildings or walls. Under the direction of a higher graded worker, incumbent removes deteriorated roofing materials in preparation for reroofing. As directed and under supervision, applies new wood, asphalt, or other materials as appropriate to roof structure. Uses hand tools related to roofing repairs such as brooms, scrapers, ladders, and square shovels. Mow's lawns using large, complex industrial-type (walking and riding type) power mowers and a small domestic power mower. Performs routine maintenance and repair on equipment. Performs custodial services and laborer related task. Intern NTE Temporary appointment not-to-exceed one year but may be extended each year without further competition, if you continue to meet the eligibility requirements under the Pathways Internship program and funding is available. Interns may be eligible for non-competitive conversion to permanent employment. Used simple measures and hand tools to replace broken planks on picnic tables; broken windows using precut stock; minor adjustments or replaces hinges, latches, and catches. Used a brush and roller on projects where appearances are not critical such as staining picnic tables and trash barrels. Tightened or replaced plumbing fittings and fixtures which do not require custom fitting or solder joints; replaced faucet washers; unplugged drains using a plunger; replaced liquid petroleum gas bottles. Performed routine maintenance on campground sites and trails using hand tools to re-grade and reset barriers to restore areas to original appearances. Operated a light truck to pick up supplies and to transport materials to and from work sites. Cleaned and serviced chemical toilets, restrooms, and other campground or visitor facilities. Operated a forklift to load and unload supplies and light equipment not requiring special rigging. Work has been under close supervision and I referred unusual problems to the supervisor or a higher graded employee. A legible copy of transcripts from an accredited institution with your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking are required. Transcripts do not need to be official, but if you are selected for this position and you used your education to qualify, you must provide official transcripts before you begin work.

Documentation may be provided in letter format from your academic advisor, school counselor, admission office, etc. to prove enrollment OR it may be provided in the form of several official documents from your school such as a copy of your official transcripts and a copy of your class schedule for next semester.
