The primary purpose of this position is to perform duties associated with the treatment, preparation, and coating of wood, metal, glass, synthetic, concrete or other surfaces.

Duties

This is an open continuous vacancy announcement. Cut-off Dates: This is an open continuous announcement, in which applications are collected over several months, and have multiple cut-off dates. Applications will be considered throughout the open period of the announcement. The first cut-off date is 11:59 pm EST, DECEMBER 13, 2024. Initial consideration will be given to candidates whose applications have been received before the first cut-off date. Additional referral certificates will be issued when a hiring official exhausts current certificate and/or additional vacancies need to be filled. Prepares surfaces by scraping, wire brushing, masking, spackling and sanding surfaces. Cleans, degreases and removes oil or wax buildup. Removes scale, rust, dirt and old paint from surfaces so that coating materials will adhere properly. Obtains supplies and equipment, sets up ladders and scaffolds, covers items with drop cloths and tape, and performs all necessary preparatory work. Mixes, thins, blends, matches, tints, and tones coating materials following specific oral and written directives. Applies coating materials such as primers, paints, varnishes, shellacs, using standard application techniques and ensures that coating finish meets surface protection requirements. Uses and maintains tools such as brushes, rollers, spray guns, graining devices, compressors, as well as common hand and power tools to do the work. Maintains records and documents of actions throughout the season. Utilizes safety practices and procedures following established safety rules and regulations and maintains a safe and clean environment. Uses and assures proper fit of required safety equipment and clothing Working Conditions: The work is done inside and outside, with dirt, spray, and fumes usually present. The employee is sometimes required to prepare, treat and coat surfaces outside in all types of weather. Protective equipment and clothing such as safety shoes, safety glasses or sun glasses, gloves, rain gear, hard hats, coveralls, respirators and other protective gear are required, which are sometimes heavy and uncomfortable. To qualify for this position, you must have sufficient knowledge and ability in the following job-related factors:(SCREEN OUT) Ability To Do The Work Of The Position Without More Than Normal Supervision (SCREEN OUT), Ability To Interpret Instructions, Specifications, etc. (other than blueprints), Ability To Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment, Dexterity and Safety, Knowledge of materials, Practices in Construction, Structure, and Technical Practices (theoretical precise, artistic) SCREENOUT: You must have the ability to satisfactorily accomplish coating work including camouflage work by standard coating methods such as brushing, rolling, and spraying, apply other related methods and techniques as cutting-in techniques and dip and overflow methods so that surfaces are fully coated and free from drips and runs, and to read and follow directions that explain how to apply and use prepared solvents and thin, mix, and stir coating materials. Skilled in standard finish processes such as hammer tone, wrinkle, and non-skid finishes which are applied as per set process. Has had safety training in this or related occupation. Can recognize obvious hazards, follow safety directions and precautions and not endanger self or co-workers. Completed projects were spot checked by a supervisor during and at the time of completion.
