The Office of Legal Services (OLS) at the Department of Labor, Office of Inspector General (DOL-OIG) offers 6 to 10- weeks summer semester 2025 Law Student opportunity for law students interested in gaining practical legal experience in the public sector. This is a great opportunity for work experience as well as credit for school. Provides assistance in the areas of legal research and writing, review policies, regulations, statutes, and contracts, and assist with ongoing litigation matters.

Duties

As an unpaid summer 2025 intern, you will be asked to assist other attorneys in the office with legal research and writing; reviewing policies, regulations, statutes, and contracts; assisting with litigation matters; reviewing audit or investigative reports; reviewing subpoenas; assisting with other legal assignments as necessary. Student Volunteers will choose the volunteer service position they are interested in. The different volunteer service positions available are: Legal position, Field Examiner position, and Administrative Professional position. Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen.
  • Must meet any applicable Federal, State, or local laws governing the employment of minors, if he/she is a minor. The minimum age requirement for employment in the Federal service is 16 years of age.
  • Appointees must sign a DOL Student Volunteer Agreement form, DL1-6082.
  • Must meet the definition of “student,” as set forth in 5 CFR 308.101, i.e. must be currently enrolled not less than half time in an accredited educational institution (HS, trade school, technical or vocational institute, junior college, or college.)
  • Must maintain status as a current student during your volunteer service.
  • Must be able to obtain a favorable background investigation.
  • Males born after 12/31/1959 must be registered for Selective Service.
  • Must be currently enrolled at an accredited law school.
  • Must be eligible to be employed in the Unites States under the immigration laws and regulations.

Qualifications

All eligibility requirements must be met at the time of application. To be a Student Volunteer, you must meet the below eligibility requirements:1. Be at least 16 years old; and 2. Be enrolled in or accepted to an accredited academic institution on an at least part-time basis. *A transcript showing proof of current enrollment is required to be submitted with your application package. Prior to onboarding, proof of enrollment for the semester of your volunteer service is required to verify your eligibility status as a student. *The Ideal Candidate for the Student Volunteer Legal position will have education of and/or experience with labor law/employment law. The candidate possesses strong research and writing skills to be able to conduct legal research and prepare reports of their findings. The ideal candidate has excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate both effectively orally and in writing. Experience with office automation systems (i.e., Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint) is desired. This position will not be filled until the Department's Placement Assistance Programs have been fully utilized. No Relocation or Permanent Change of Station Incentives will be offered. No Recruitment Incentives will be offered. This position is outside the bargaining unit. This position is telework eligible based on managements' determination. Candidate required to obtain the necessary security/investigation level.

Education

Student Volunteer Program Education Requirement:

Must be currently enrolled or accepted for enrollment and seeking a degree in law, diploma, or certificate at an accredited college; professional, technical, vocational, or trade school; advanced degree program; or other qualifying academic institution on a full-time or part-time basis. Education must be accredited by an accrediting institution recognized by the U.S. Department of Education in order for it to be credited towards qualifications; applicant's resumes and supporting documentation should only reflect education received from schools accredited by such institutions. If you are using foreign education to meet qualification requirements, you must send a Certificate of Foreign Equivalency (a U.S. private organization's interpretation that such education has been deemed at least equivalent to conventional U.S. education programs) with your transcript in order to receive credit for that education.
