This position will serve as a Supervisory Police Officer - Lieutenant at the Orlando VA Medical Center in, Orlando Fl. ensuring a safe and secure environment across all VA Administrations with various settings, including a variety of jurisdictional environments. In this capacity, you will direct, coordinate and perform supervisory and non-supervisory policing law enforcement assignments and projects.

Duties

Major duties include, but not limited to: Protects the civil rights of all individuals on VA controlled property; Performs various law enforcement and administrative functions throughout the department; Manages, supervises and coordinates the Police Service law enforcement activities for a designated assigned area; Serves as a watch commander or administrative lieutenant at the geographic area level; Conducts inspections of personnel, equipment and facilities to ensure compliance with departmental policies and procedures; Establishes priorities to coordinate, plan, organize and complete work; Oversees human resource activities such as recruitment of vacancies; preparing, conducting and reviewing performance evaluations; takes disciplinary action; identifies and conducts specific training; approves and monitors leave requests; Responds to highly dangerous and active crimes in progress Makes independent decisions to take, direct and coordinate immediate steps to preserve life and property; Performs other related duties as assigned. Work Schedule: Rotating 12 hour Shifts; 6:00am - 6:00pm; 6:00pm - 6:00am. Selectee may be required to work various shifts to include nights, weekends, holidays, overtime and emergency call-backs. Selectee may also be required to travel between any of the locations within Corporate Orlando. To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement. To meet the minimum qualifications for this position, you musthave at least one (1) full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-8 grade level in the Federal service (or equivalent pay band), that provided a knowledge of a body of basic laws and regulations, law enforcement operations, practices, and techniques and involved responsibility for maintaining order and protecting life and property. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement. In this instance, you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates one-year time-in-grade. Specialized Experience: supervising and providing guidance/direction to security and law enforcement personnel at various levels on duties in response to potential threats of violence, detecting criminal activity, fire and other emergencies; enforcing federal, state, and local laws; ensuring compliance with security and law enforcement policies, procedures, laws and regulations; performs various administrative functions to include review and prepare police activity reports and correspondence, prioritizing, approving/disapproving work assignments, monitoring budget and budget requests, managing/overseeing personnel activity, etc.; may have served as a Officer-In-Charge within a police department. You must provide detailed information of your experience performed. Information such as "I was a Patrolman", "I was a Police Officer for a number of years," or "I enforced Federal, State, county, and laws" is insufficient to determine your qualifications. Experience must be fully documented in your resume and must include job title, duties, month & year start/end dates AND hours worked per week. Firearm Qualification Requirement: VA Police Officers are required to carry agency-approved firearms while on duty on VA property. Officers must achieve and maintain qualification/certification with the agency-approved firearms as condition of gaining and continuing employment as a Police Officer. Applicants must be able to possess firearms under the terms of the Gun Control Act of 1968, as amended (18 U.S.C. 922(g)(9). Driver's License Requirement: Must possess a valid, unrestricted State driver's license, have a safe driving record, and demonstrate that he or she is medically qualified to operate the appropriate motor vehicle safely. Will be required to pass agency Government Vehicle Drivers physical examination. POLICE OFFICER CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT New VA Police Officers are required to attend an 8 week course at the VA Law Enforcement Training Center in Little Rock, Arkansas. Satisfactory completion of this course is a condition of continued employment. A medical examination is required.
