As a Materials Examiner and Identifier you will perform duties and tasks related to the proper receipt, identification/examination, storage, and preparation of submitted samples, veterinary biologics, laboratory reagents, equipment, supplies and related materials, as well as, disposing of decontaminated biological waste and/or materials. at the National Bio and Agro-Defense Facility (NBAF)
Duties
The duties may include, but are not limited to:
Operates and controls both the pallet and package x-ray scanners, using image interpretation skills to read and verify the x-ray image for explosive detection
Performs the full range of examining and identifying explosive materials for the most complex categories of materials and equipment.
Examines and identifies complex and difficult items received such as: no markings or documentation; require exhaustive and extensive research; require reference to complex, subjective specifications.
Adheres to warehousing plan and accepted warehousing methods, procedures and techniques to select proper storage location.
Receives, sorts, processes and prepares US Mail for delivery within the main facility.
Issues inventory, supplies and materials; stores and pulls warehouse stock; packs and unpacks materials; loads and unloads materials; uses computerized equipment to process orders issued..
Resource for external and internal customers and for communicating to ensure that outgoing shipments are packaged, labeled and shipped according to applicable regulations
Assembles and arranges for Foreign and Domestic shipments of infectious materials, including Select Agents and Toxins, sample kits, check tests, reagents and supplies.
Coordinates enhanced security procedures for the temporary storage of outgoing and incoming Select Agents and Toxins.
Requirements
- You must be a US Citizen or US National.
- Individuals who were born male after 12/31/1959 must be Selective Service registered or exempt.
- Subject to satisfactory adjudication of background investigation and/or fingerprint check.
- Successful completion of one year probationary period, unless previously served.

- Testing Designated Position: Selectee must submit to a urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment and random testing thereafter. Final appointment and continued employment is conditional on negative results for illegal drug use.

- Valid state driver's license is required at the time of application.
- All USDA employees are required to be enrolled in Continuous Vetting, which authorizes government agencies to receive notifications of criminal activity on individuals who hold low risk, public trust, or national security positions.
- Duties may require working in personal protective clothing and gear.
- Moderately heaving physical effort is required and occasional lifting of items weighing more than 70 pounds.
- Criminal Justice Information Services database check required for work involving Biological Select Agents and Toxins
- Position is subject to random and applicant drug testing
Qualifications
