Duties
An appointment as an AUSA with the U.S. Attorney's Office in the Eastern District of Virginia offers unique and challenging experiences for highly motivated attorneys, including an opportunity to work on their own caseload as a representative of the United States. This office is hiring for one AUSA in the Newport News Office. The AUSA will handle all phases of criminal prosecution, from investigation and trial through appeals and collateral litigation, including the prosecution of violent crimes involving murders, racketeering, firearms violations, arsons, carjackings, and robberies; gang-related crimes, threat offenses, child exploitation offenses, and narcotics prosecutions; as well as national security and white-collar offenses, and other cases as deemed necessary.
This position will be located in Newport News, Virginia and will require travel to Norfolk and Richmond for court appearances and case assignments.
Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as your training and experience progress.
Security Requirements: Initial appointment is conditioned upon a satisfactory preemployment adjudication. This includes fingerprint, credit and tax checks, and drug testing. In addition, continued employment is subject to a favorable adjudication of a background investigation.
Residency Requirements: Assistant United States Attorneys generally must reside in the district to which he or she is appointed or within 25 miles thereof. See 28 U.S.C. 545 for district-specific information.

- You must be a United States Citizen or National.

- J.D. degree and active member of the bar (any U.S. jurisdiction) required.

Qualifications
Required qualifications: Applicants must possess a J.D. degree, be an active member of the bar (any U.S. jurisdiction), have at least three years post-J.D. legal or other relevant experience, and possess superior oral and written communication skills as well as strong interpersonal skills, exhibit good judgment, and have demonstrated the capacity to function with minimal guidance in a highly demanding environment.
Preferred qualifications: Experience litigating criminal cases in the federal courts and/or a federal judicial clerkship is desirable. Equivalent experience litigating in state courts will also be considered. Experience litigating violent crime cases is preferred.
United States citizenship is required.
