About the Position: This is a PERMANENT position as a Forestry Technician located at the Directorate of Public Works, Fort Jackson, South Carolina.
Duties
Operates as Assistant Fire Management Officer and works on a wildland fire team to complete wildfire suppression and prescribed burning actions, directing work of other natural resources personnel, and equipment operator.
Operates a variety of wildland fire equipment including crawler tractor with fire plow and transport truck.
Serves as senior Forestry Technician assisting forestry personnel and directing the work of other natural resources personnel and equipment operator in the technical planning and implementation of a variety of forest management activities.
Develops inspection plans and monitors forestry contract operations on the installation to ensure compliance with contract specifications.
Responsible for the timber marking program. Plans, coordinates, conducts, and directs timber marking activities and forest inventories. Uses automated systems to analyze data and prepare maps.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- This position will require the incumbent to obtain and maintain a valid State issued class B license within 12 months of employment.
- This position requires a National Wildfire Coordinating Group (NWCG) firefighter pre-employment and annual physical.
- This position is covered by the Civilian Drug Abuse Testing Program. Incumbent is required to sign a DA Form 5019-R, 'Condition of Employment for Certain Civilian Positions Identified as Critical Under the Drug Abuse Testing Program.
- Must work fluctuating hours and overtime as necessary and is on call back 24/7.
- Wear of personal protective equipment is required.
- Must be able to work in demanding physical conditions in various types of terrain and weather, sometimes in hazardous conditions.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes technical planning and coordination of a variety of forest management activities which include: (1) wildland fire management, (2) selective tree marking and timber volume estimation, (3) forest inventory, AND (4) insect and disease control. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-08).

Education: Master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as: Forestry.
OR
Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the first year (total graduate semester hours minus 18) by 18. Add the two percentages.
