Job opening: Geneticist

Salary: $73 088 - 95 011 per year
City: Ames
Published at: Nov 21 2024
Employment Type: Full-time
This position is located in the USDA, Agricultural Research Service, Midwest Area, Corn Insects and Crop Genetics Research Unit in Ames, IA. In this position, you will serve as a member of an interdisciplinary team investigating genetic, genomic, and computational strategies to identify key defense signaling components between barley (plant host) and powdery mildew (fungal pathogen), with the long-term objective of translating research findings to produce high yield, disease resistant crops.

Duties

Provide genetic, molecular biology, and bioinformatic support to the research group and conduct molecular analyses of genes, transcripts, and proteins from barley cultivars, populations, and mutants. Extract, sequence, and align data from pertinent software or databases, design of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) constructs, analysis of mutants, and execution of virus induced gene silencing protocols. Maintain and manage growth chamber, greenhouse crossing experiments, and field nurseries. Plan, design, and conduct controlled crosses among different varieties of barley. Use Yeast Two-Hybrid Next-Generation Interaction Screening (Y2H-NGIS) to identify barley protein-pathogen effector interactions. Propagate obligate biotrophic fungi (mildews and rusts). Use reference genome sequences, mapped genes, and expression data to identify barley genes and proteins that interact with fungal effectors that alter resistance responses.

Requirements

  • You must be a US Citizen or US National.
  • Males born after 12/31/1959 must be Selective Service registered or exempt.
  • Subject to satisfactory adjudication of background investigation and/or fingerprint check.
  • Successful completion of one year probationary period, unless previously served.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement including time-in-grade restrictions, specialized experience and/or education, as defined below. Time in grade: Current federal employees applying for a promotion opportunity must meet time-in-grade (TIG) requirement of 52 weeks of service at the next lower grade level in the normal line of progression for the position being filled. Basic Requirements for Genetics Series, 0440 Degree: genetics; or one of the basic biological sciences that included at least 9 semester hours in genetics. Graduate Education: Genetics, or a curriculum or pattern of training that placed major emphasis on genetics. Graduate study in related fields such as plant breeding, agronomy, horticulture, animal, dairy, or poultry husbandry, entomology, microbiology, plant pathology, chemistry, molecular and cellular biology, and physiology that involved cross-training in genetics is qualifying, provided it placed sufficient emphasis on genetics. Evaluation of Education: Most students in the field take graduate work because specific training in genetics may be limited at the undergraduate level. Under these circumstances, it may be necessary to evaluate undergraduate course work in genetics in one of two ways, as described below, to determine whether or not it is qualifying. Courses dealing with genetics, some phase of genetics, or specific techniques that are applied in genetics work are acceptable. This includes courses in genetics, plant or animal genetics, molecular and cellular biology, mathematics and statistics (as they apply to genetics), population dynamics, and certain techniques such as those dealing with irradiation. Course work consisting of an appropriate combination of basic courses in genetics and cytology or statistics are also acceptable. Additional Requirements In addition to meeting the basic requirements described above, applicants must also meet additional qualification requirements as stated below. GS-11 Specialized Experience: Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. Specialized experience must be described for each grade level advertised. The specialized experience requirements for this position are: Qualifying experience for GS-11 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-09 which is directly related to the work of this position, and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience conducting research on effectors that alter disease resistance responses in crops; using Yeast Two-Hybrid Next-Generation Interaction Screening (Y2H-NGIS) to identify plant protein-pathogen effector interactions; utilizing molecular genetic methods to characterize candidate defense genes and pathogen effectors; conducting controlled crosses of different barley genotypes; and maintaining plant inventory in a laboratory, greenhouse, or field environment. OR Education: Successful completion of three years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree, if directly related to the position. Related degrees may include Plant Pathology, Genetics, Genomics, Molecular Biology, Biology, or related fields. OR A combination of graduate education and specialized experience as described above. Physical Demands The work is primarily performed in a normal office, lab, greenhouse, or field setting and does not require any special physical effort. Work Environment The work is usually conducted in an office or laboratory environment and involves the normal risks associated with these facilities. Travel to on-site laboratories is sometimes required to visit government, university, or industry collaborators and to attend conferences. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Education

If education is required or being used to qualify, you must submit a copy of your college transcripts. An unofficial copy is sufficient with the application if it includes your name and the necessary course information; however, if you are selected, official transcripts will be required prior to entering on duty. Education must have been successfully obtained from an accredited school, college or university. If any education was completed at a foreign institute, you must submit with your application evidence that the institute was appropriately accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education as equivalent to U.S. education standards. There are private organizations that specialize in this evaluation and a fee is normally associated with this service. For a list of private organizations that evaluate education, visit the NACES website. All transcripts must be in English or include an English translation.
