This position is located at the Minneapolis VA Health Care System within the Facilities Management service line. This is a Journeyman level position. Journeyman level automatic transport mechanic duties include monitoring, maintenance, and repair on assigned systems, performing complex tasks independently. System maintenance is of the utmost importance with detailed attention to alignment, calibration, lubrication and adjustment to assure full systems capabilities at all times.
Duties
Major duties include:
Install, repair, remove, modify, align, calibrate, overhaul and perform preventive maintenance on systems and equipment at the VA Medical Center
Conduct weekly, monthly, 500 and 1,000 hour preventative maintenance (PM's)
Component level troubleshooting and repair to include but not limited to the following; calibrate delivery/pick-up points, repair and/or replace safety scan bumpers, calibrate vehicle laser scanners, adjust distribution board voltage, rebuild or replace drive/steer motor, grease bearings on AGV and modules, replace module bumpers, monitor tires for wear and delamination
Perform weekly and monthly PM's to clean suction and exhaust screens, program and maintain system programmable logic controllers and variable frequency drive, test riser fire dampers, maintain trash and paper/cardboard compactors, monitor velocity readings to ensure proper suction, repair pneumatic arms and valves, maintain trash chute doors and slider, repair/replace low voltage key switches, grease dumpster rails and doors, and calibrate/replace pressure transducers
Perform weekly and monthly PM's on automatic doors to include cleaning and lubricating tracks, setting and adjusting time dependent program features, program operators via Bluetooth Palm Pilot
Perform monthly PM's and testing on fire alarm systems, diagnose system troubles using specialized test equipment and end of loop resistor practices, repair and/or replace of system components to include new installation (fire/smoke detectors, speakers, horns, strobes, pull stations, and batteries), program devices, and daily monitoring
Perform installation, programming, testing, and troubleshooting of all components and subsystems of security systems
Check Point temperature/humidity monitoring system for refrigerator and freezer units
Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 7:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. (work hours may be further discussed during the interview)

SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. To be found at least minimally qualified for the position of Electronic Mechanics WG-10 level, your application and supporting documents must demonstrate the critical knowledge, skills, and abilities that are essential for satisfactory job performance. For this position, you must have the ability to do the work without more than normal supervision in performing the full range of duties. Examples of qualifying related experience include: install, repair, remove, modify, align, calibrate, overhaul and perform preventive maintenance on systems and equipment (ex. Auto Guided Vehicle, pneumatic trash system, automatic doors, fire alarm system, security systems); troubleshoot malfunctions of electronic, mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems; utilize test equipment, such as oscilloscopes, voltmeter, ohmmeter, laser and fire control test sets; and read schematics, work orders, shop drawings, and blueprints specific to work assignments.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Physical Requirements: You will be asked to participate in a pre-employment examination or evaluation as part of the pre-employment process for this position. Questions about physical demands or environmental factors may be addressed at the time of evaluation or examination. The work is active, frequently requiring physical effort in lifting up to 35 pounds without assistance and over 50 pounds with assistance from other workers or weight handling equipment. Work assignments involve frequent standing, sitting, climbing of ladders, bending and working in cramped and awkward positions.
Working Conditions: The work is primarily indoors in a well-lighted, heated and ventilated shop area or building, but at times can be subjected to inclement weather conditions. Occasionally, the incumbent is exposed to the possibility of burns, cuts, electric shock, falls from a ladder and other normal hazards associated with working around machinery and confined spaces. Normal tour of duty will be a rotating shift between 5 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., including weekends, or as required to support facility services.
