THIS IS A NATIONAL GUARD TITLE 32 EXCEPTED SERVICE POSITION. This National Guard position is for a SURFACE MAINTENANCE MECHANIC LEADER (TITLE 32), Position Description Number D1288000 and is part of the NC G4, National Guard (G4 - SMM - MATES / MD 7021-501).

Duties

As a SURFACE MAINTENANCE MECHANIC LEADER, WL-5801-11, you will assign work orders to specific crewmembers and select workers for various jobs on the basis of knowledge; pass on instructions received from the supervisor, demonstrate proper work methods; insure plans, blueprints, material, and tools are available, and needed stock obtained from supply locations; work with other workers, sets pace performing non-supervisory repair work of the same kind/level as that done by the group led; work performed involves troubleshooting, maintenance/major repairs on heavy-duty mobile equipment, combat, tactical, automotive vehicles, assure enough work to keep the work crew busy; check work in progress when finished for compliance with supervisor's instructions, work orders, established shop procedures on work sequence, methods/ deadlines; direct/advise workers to follow supervisor's instructions to meet deadlines; answers questions regarding procedures, policies, written instructions, other directives; interprets work instructions/assists Repairers/trainees in the more difficult/complex tasks; provide info to supervisor on status/progress of work, causes of delays, overall work operations/problems; assure that safety/housekeeping rules are followed; troubleshoots, performs maintenance/ major repairs on heavy-duty mobile equipment, combat, tactical, automotive vehicles; troubleshoots repairs, overhaul major systems; make repairs to assemblies /components; troubleshoots equipment, diagnose the cause of mechanical failures by visual/ auditory checks, use test equipment; utilize embedded diagnostics equipment and a variety of original equipment manufacturer system analyzers in order to determine the exact nature/extent of repair; determine what adjustments necessary to complete work orders, and whether any additional repairs other than those specified or indicated on the work order are necessary; conduct readiness/repair inspections on vehicles and associated equipment supported by the activity; perform operational inspections; ensures vehicles/equipment are serviced, inspect supported equipment prior to use during IDT/AT, ensure that it is functioning properly; inspect in-process repair work repairer to ensure equipment is being repaired in accordance with pertinent requirements; serve as an inspector during COMET or as a member of a MAIT; instruct operator/crew in the maintenance of equipment, assistance to supported units when requested; perform other duties assigned.

• This is an excepted service position that requires membership in a compatible military assignment in the employing state's National Guard, required prior to the effective date of placement.
• Selectee will be required to wear the military uniform.
• Acceptance of an excepted service position constitutes concurrence with these requirements as a condition of employment.
• Applicants who are not currently a member of the National Guard must be eligible for immediate membership and employment in the National Guard in the military grade listed in this announcement.
• Males born after 31 December 1959 must be registered for Selective Service.
• Federal employment suitability as determined by a background investigation.
• May be required to successfully complete a probationary period.

• This position is covered by the Domestic Violence Misdemeanor Amendment (30 Sep 96) of the Gun Control Act (Lautenberg Amendment) of 1968. An individual convicted of a qualifying crime of domestic violence may not perform the duties of this position.

Qualifications

Military Grades: Enlisted (E5 to E8) Minimum Requirements: Experience or training that has provided the candidate with sufficient knowledge to complete the work of this occupational series. Experience or training which demonstrates the candidates ability to lead other technicians engaged in the duties performed by this occupational series. SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: (24 months) In addition to the journeyman level knowledge, experience which demonstrates the ability to plan, organize, and lead the work of others in fields directly related the repair function of this occupational series. Must have the ability to perform administrative functions; to read and interpret a variety of technical publications used in the repair of supported equipment. The ability to provide guidance to others in work related directly to this occupational series.
