Click on "Learn more about this agency" button below for IMPORTANT additional information. The primary purpose of this position is to serve as to instruct within the University Teaching and Learning Center's writing programs, develop and administer Writing Center tutor training programs.

Duties

Develop and present special programs that promote development of good study skills and writing practices. Prepare and conduct seminars on student academic survival skills and writing enhancement strategies. Perform writing center program evaluation duties. Assist with accurate compilation and production of reports that provide statistical evaluation of program effectiveness, Develop and maintain materials in support of university learning writing center and university educational programs. Brief academic program directors and other faculty members effectively on writing center programs, as required. Provide accurate guidance and assistance to university academic programs. Present informational seminars at university teaching and learning center and other facilities as well as online to aid faculty in grasping Writing Center capabilities.

  • The incumbent will provide writing assistance outside normal class hours to meet student and faculty needs, may usually left 25 lbs. or less and may stand for an extended period of time.
  • Employee may be required to work other than normal duty hours, to include evenings, weekends and/or holidays
  • Work required visual acuity and color perception is necessary for computer work, checking of records and diplomas. A high degree of hand/eye coordination is also required.
  • Must satisfactorily complete a pre-employment physical before entrance on duty, unless otherwise exempt.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the specialized experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards for General Schedule Positions, Professional and Scientific Positions. In order to qualify for this Writing Center Program Specialist position, GS-1701-11, you must meet one of the BASIC Educational Requirement options *AND* meet one of the ADDITIONAL Qualification Requirement options. Basic Education Requirement: A. Degree: successful completion of a four-year degree that included or was supplemented by a major field in education or 24 semester hours (or equivalent) of specific course work in Writing as an Editor, Technical/Creative Writer, Journalism, Communications, Linguistics, or in a subject matter appropriate to the position. NOTE: YOU MUST SUBMIT A COPY OF YOUR TRANSCRIPT TO VERIFY YOUR EDUCATION. FAILURE TO SUBMIT YOUR TRANSCRIPT WILL RESULT IN AN INELIGIBLE RATING. OR B. Combination of education and experience---with courses equivalent to a major in education, or in a subject matter field appropriate to the position such as Writing as an Editor, Technical/Creative Writer, Journalism, Communications, Linguistics; plus appropriate experience or additional course work that provided knowledge comparable to that normally acquired through the successful completion of the 4-year course of study described in above. NOTE: You must submit copies of your transcripts. YOU MUST SUBMIT A COPY OF YOUR TRANSCRIPT TO VERIFY YOUR EDUCATION. FAILURE TO SUBMIT YOUR TRANSCRIPT WILL RESULT IN AN INELIGIBLE RATING. In addition to meeting the basic qualification requirements above. Applicant must be one of the qualification requirements below: Specialized Experience: Applicants must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-09 level (or equivalent in other pay systems) in the federal service in which equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) to perform successfully the duties of the position. Specialized experience is experience which includes developing and administering instructional and tutorial writing training programs, planning and conducting writing center courses, learning and study skills seminars to students or large group of faculties, and making recommendations to resolve and improve effectiveness and efficiency of writing program materials, training delivery, student learning skills, and management of writing center educational programs. OR Education: Three years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree which demonstrates the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to perform the work of this position. NOTE: YOU MUST SUBMIT COPIES OF YOUR TRANSCRIPTS TO VERIFY YOUR EDUCATION. OR Combination of Experience and Education: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position if the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100 percent. To combine education and experience, determine the total qualifying experience as a percentage of the experience required for the grade level. Then determine the education as a percentage of the education required for the grade level. Finally, add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify an applicant for that grade level. YOU MUST SUBMIT A COPY OF YOUR TRANSCRIPT TO VERIFY YOUR EDUCATION. Ability to prioritize and organize assigned activities effectively to meet short and long-range goals and objectives. Ability to motivate students and to increase interest in learning and improving their communication skills. 5. Ability to evaluate information related to programs, materials and individuals, determine effectiveness, identify problems, and recommend solutions. 6. Ability to use a computer and associated software for computer-based tutorials, word-processing, database and graphic functions. PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
