This position is located within the Billings Area Indian Health Services, Blackfeet Service Unit, Health Information Management Department located in Heart Butte, MT. The purpose of this position is to monitor and maintain medical records for compliance with regulatory requirements. The incumbent works to review, analyze, code, abstract and compile data, performs clerical functions, educational/training, and maintaining medical records information.
Duties
Assists in providing ongoing education, updates and briefs physicians, nursing staff, and health care personnel within the immediate organization or work unit, on coding updates, rules, regulations, and guidelines.
Assists in scanning all medical documents into the patient record. Provides proper protection and confidentiality of protected health information and sensitive data.
Quantitative Analysis - Performs comprehensive review of the record to assure the presence of all component parts, such as: correct name, health record number, signatures and dates where required, and all reports which appear to be indicated by the treatment rendered.
Qualitative Analysis - Evaluates the record for documentation, consistency, accuracy, and correlation of recorded data, such as medical necessity and modifier usage, Ensures the final diagnosis as stated by the physician is valid, complete and accurately reflects the care and treatment rendered

In addition to the Basic Requirements, you must also meet the Minimum Qualifications stated below
.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
GS-06: Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-05 grade level.
GS-07: Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-06 grade level.
GS-08: Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-07 grade level.
General Experience: Progressively responsible clerical, office, or other work that indicates ability to acquire the particular knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties of the position to be filled.
Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks:
Examples of specialized experience at the GS-06 level:
Enter billing transaction codes and data from charge tickets; work with automated records systems, data entry and encoder software; use coding conventions, techniques, coding rules and regulations; maintain confidentiality of medical records.
Examples of specialized experience at the GS-07 level:
Evaluate the medical record for internal consistency and completeness; responsible for coding the diagnoses, operations and/or procedures from the medical record and entering into the resources and patient management system; assure the final diagnosis and operative procedures as slated by the physician are valid and complete; make final determination that the record is complete, accurate and reflects sufficient data to justify the diagnosis.
Examples of specialized experience at the GS-08 level:
Accurately assigns and sequences medical codes for all diagnoses, procedures, and services; reviews and assigns accurate current procedural terminology codes; analyzes medical documentation to assure the appropriate evaluation and management levels are assigned; responsible for coding all related ambulatory visits.

Time In Grade
Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level. Time-In-Grade provisions do not apply under the Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP).
