This position is located at the Chinle Service Unit, Division of Clinical Services, Dental Department, in Pinon, AZ. The purpose of this position is to provide routine and specialty clinical pediatric dental services in the Service Unit clinics and operating room to the patients of the Service Unit. Pediatric Dentistry is an age-defined specialty that provides both primary and comprehensive preventive and therapeutic oral health care.

Duties

Total Compensation Package - Check out IHS's outstanding total compensation package for this job: Total Compensation | Pay (ihs.gov) Provides diagnostic services using history, radiographs, examination, diagnostic models, referral, and other appropriate tests during routine clinic hours by consultation. Diagnoses difficult cases not susceptible to acceptable methods requiring differential diagnosis. Provides complex restoration of teeth lost to severe and rampant caries, periodontal disease and trauma to the oral cavity and supporting structures. Cases may be of a difficult nature, involving patient management of medically and developmentally compromised patients. Services performed may be with patients susceptible to, or having serious infections, marked drug sensitivities, compromised behavioral responses from emotional, developmental and physical stress, serious systemic or genetic diseases; limited control of physical faculties; higher than average morbidity and mortality rates, and unusual oral tissue development and conditions. Provides preventive services that include fluoridation activities, sealants and other preventive measures. Performs root canal therapy and other pulpal therapy, including pulpal regeneration, apexification, apexogenesis, pulpotomies, pulpectomies, and root canals of permanent teeth in the pediatric population. Uses digital scanner and CAD/CAM equipment to manufacture and cement porcelain crowns/onlays as needed to preserve permanent teeth in the pediatric population. Maintains patient's treatment record using the electronic dental record (Dentrix). Records oral conditions of teeth and surrounding tissues, clinical notes, consultations, and treatment administered.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. BASIC REQUIREMENTS: Education: Applicants must have a Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) or Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) degree from a school approved by the American Dental Association (ADA) or the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) or an accrediting body recognized by the U. S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. Licensure: Applicants must have passed the National Board Dental Examinations (NBDE) which are developed and administered by the Joint Commission on National Dental Examinations (JCNDE) and possess a current, full, and unrestricted license to practice dentistry in a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States. Medical Requirements: Applicants must be able to distinguish shades of color. MINIMIUM QUALIFICATIONS: Experience: In addition to meeting the above education and licensure requirements, applicants must have one or more full years of experience, equivalent to at least the next lower grade level, performing professional dentistry work for GS-12 level and above assignments. Qualifying experience involves the evaluation, prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases, injuries, and disorders of the oral cavity and maxillofacial area. Examples of dentistry experience may include the removal of decay; filling cavities; straightening, extracting, and repairing teeth; treating gum diseases; performing corrective surgery; making measurements/models for dentures to replace missing teeth, administering anesthetics, writing prescriptions; and performing other requirements of the position. Some dentists specialize in an area, such as, but not limited to, the following: Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Pediatric Dentistry Periodontics Prosthodontics Endodontics Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology Dental Public Health For that above specialty, experience, education, board certification, and/or training must clearly establish the applicant's status as a specialist. Additional Requirements for the GS-13: In addition to the above Basic Requirements for the GS-12 (or equivalent) level, applicants must complete a 3-year residency program in dentistry, oral health, craniofacial sciences, or a related medical science; or equivalent experience, equivalent to at least the next lower grade level, and/or training. Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of professional experience equivalent to at least the GS-12 grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: Highly developed diagnostic skills; expert treatment planning ability and considerable skill in administering treatment; relate skills and knowledge to the needs of a complex dental public health program. The selected individual is required to obtain and maintain medical staff clinical privileges, including any licensure requirements. If privileges are not obtained or maintained during employment, the employee will be subject to adverse actions, up to and including removal from Federal service. You must meet all qualification requirements within 30 days of the closing date of the announcement.
