This position serves as the Boiler Operator for the Overton Brooks Veterans Affairs Medical Center (OBVAMC). The OBVAMC covers 40+/- acres and approximately 720,000 gross building square footage and has three CBOC locations, Longview and Texarkana, Texas, and Monroe Louisiana. This position works under the general supervision of the Operations Supervisor, Maintenance and Operations Section.
Duties
Responsible for the safe operation of the central heating plant consisting of three (3) Keeler type DS high pressure natural gas fired boiler and A/C units controlled by a Hays Cleveland automated control system
Remotely monitors and controls most primary functions with most adjustments and corrections to system operations accomplished using an automated system
Performs operational maintenance of gas/oil fired power boilers and auxiliary equipment with manual/automatic controls to produce saturated or superheated steam
Checks operation of safety equipment such as flame failure, low water cut-outs, high pressure cut-outs, and purge type combustion safety
Regulates fuel feed and water levels
Maintains required steam pressure and temperatures
Replenishes chemical feed tanks and monitors feed water conditioning equipment to control or remove impurities and entrapped gases
Responsible for routine corrective maintenance and operation of three (3) York centrifugal chiller units along with associated auxiliary equipment
Operate controls, start and stop air handling equipment and adjust humidity limits
Performs a variety of specialized work activities generating diverse heating, air conditioning, and ventilation requirements
Work Schedule: Monday - Sunday; 10 Hour Shifts: 6:00 am - 4:00 pm; 4:00 pm - 2:00 am; 8:00 pm - 6:00 am; Subject to change based on the needs of the facility/service

Physical Requirements: Work is frequently conducted in confined areas in/around boilers, pumps, tanks, and HVAC equipment. Requires moderate to strenuous effort and long periods of walking, standing, climbing, bending, and crouching. Frequently lift and carry boiler parts and chemical supplies weighing up to 50 pounds, unassisted. Occasionally and with assistance, carries items weighing over 50 pounds.
