This position is located on a Forest Service Research unit. The incumbent performs duties in support of the of wildlife biology and genetics management program.
Duties
The incumbent performs technical assignments consisting mostly of, but not limited to, routine laboratory experiments that require the use of accepted, standardized laboratory practices.
Incumbent uses knowledge of standard genetic laboratory techniques to set up DNA testing assays using a variety of specialized laboratory equipment.
Works with a variety of animal specimens, performs DNA extractions, polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and gel electrophoresis in the laboratory.
Incumbent analyzes experimental data gathered in the laboratory, performs statistical manipulations, and accurately summarizes the data.
Serves as a genetics team member in laying out experiments for studies and pilot tests to yield genetic information.
Selects and uses the appropriate test on standard and non-standard DNA samples to inform species, individual, sex and population data. Keeps comprehensive records of DNA data obtained and compiles data for reports.
Ensures that laboratory work assignments are carried out in a safe and timely manner. Operates a variety of scientific and laboratory instruments, calculating machines, and other office equipment as required.

Qualifications

GS-05: Applicants must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least GS-4 grade level; OR a bachelor's degree or 4 years of successfully completed education above high school leading to a bachelor's degree with at least 24 semester hours in any combination of courses such biology, chemistry, statistics, entomology, animal husbandry, botany, physics, agriculture, or mathematics. At least 6 semester hours of courses must have been directly related to the position to be filled. The successful completion of a full course of study of at least 12 months in a school for clinical laboratory technicians may be substituted for the 1 year of specialized experience required at the GS-05 level for positions involving microbiology and biochemistry technician work; OR combinations of successfully completed post-high school education (in excess of the first 60 semester hours) and specialized experience. The education must have been obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college, or university.
Examples of specialized experience include: Participating in biochemistry related projects by assisting with measurements, recording observations, and assisting with the collection of specimens.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
