The Maintenance Mechanic supports the delivery of quality health care at this VA Medical Center in a cost-effective manner by serving as the craftsman inspector for a wide range of minor (''in-house") construction projects which include equipment installations, renovations and improvements to the hospital's physical plant. Typically, 20-30 projects are underway at various stages of conceptualization, design, demolition, materials procurement and construction at any given time.
Duties
As a journeyman, repairs, installs, remodels or alters doom, door fames and trim, all kinds of hardware, shelves, staging, furniture, floors, walls, toilet partitions, wall coverings and partitions.
Erects partitions of metal studs and gypsum wallboard or prefabricated materials.
As a journeyman, performs maintenance, repair, alterations and construction of exterior and interior surfaces and structures built of a variety of brick, block and stone and lays common and face brick, tile firebrick, glazed tile, ceramic tile, cinder and cement block, glass block, terra cotta and various artificial and natural stone to repair and construct such items as walls, walks, manholes, boilers and catch basins.
Mixes, applies and finishes plaster surfaces in the construction and repair of interior walls and ceilings and performs new plastering on all types of backgrounds such as metal, wood or gypsum lath, wallboard, and masonry surfaces as well as repairing and patching plaster surfaces.
Under general guidance of the Supervisory Maintenance Mechanic, initiates (drafts) requests for supplies for necessary (steel studs, sheet rock, doors, hardware, cement block, concrete mix, lath and plaster mix, ceiling grids and acoustical tiles, etc.) for the specific construction task.
Constructs all new space partitions using dry wall construction and/or masonry tile, as appropriate, and is responsible for delivery of a thoroughly finished product that matches the quality of the original hospital construction.
Possesses thorough familiarity with accreditation and building code requirements and the ability to improvise when established methods are not practical.
Interprets blueprints, drawings, building codes, practices and standards of the trade.
Fills in the gaps on incomplete blueprints and sketches and knowledge of advanced shop mathematics to plan and compute work with features such as arcs or circles.
Possesses an extensive knowledge of the working properties, gradations in quality and other characteristics of the variety of material used in hospital construction.
Demonstrates thorough knowledge and extensive experience in the mason and plastering
trade practices and is skilled in applying work methods and techniques in a variety of
exacting plaster, work such as running baseboards, moldings, cornices and applying
special finishes.
As a journeyman, uses safety and precision of any carpentry tools and equipment in both shop and field work, including work involving curves, angles and irregular shapes which must have exact measurements or fits.
Uses tools common to the plastering trade such as angle trowels, screeds, plaster's hawk, straight edges and cement mixers.
Possesses comprehensive knowledge of the techniques and procedures of brick, block, tile and stonework.
Constructs sills, lintels and arches.
Performs decorative brickwork, veneer, tile and cut, shape finish stone.
Uses a variety of hand and power tools such as brick or napping hammer, brick or skill saw, stone axe, pick chisel and hammer.
Uses a variety of building crafts including carpentry, masonry, cement work, plastering and other related trades. Typical construction projects include equipment installation (HVAC, nourishment kitchen, film processor, etc.), renovation of office space including relocation of walls, doors, plumbing and lighting etc.
Works from detailed engineering drawings with complete specifications or from only rudimentary conceptual sketches of the construction to be performed.
Plans, lays out and completes work according to accepted trade standards following work orders, blueprints, building plans, sketches and building codes. This includes determining details such as dimensions, type of structure, material to be used and assembling tools and material needed to complete assignments.
Completes finishing work to obtain a smooth surface and to obtain proper texture and is able to perform angular, rounded and overhead plastering.
As the senior journeyman of the construction crew, reviews dimensional layout of the construction boundaries including locations of new walls, plumbing fixtures, conduit penetrations, etc. and for the erection of any necessary dust confining barriers.
Uses and maintains a complete set of hand and power tools including but not limited to: saws, planes, sanders, routers and drills in order to accomplish different tasks such as cut bevels, rabbets, chamfers, dados, grooves and miter joints.

Physical Requirements: Incumbent works at benches or while materials arc on support. This requires considerable standing, stooping and bending. Incumbent also works on ladders and scaffolds which require him/her to work overhead or in stretched, cramped or awkward positions. Arm movement is considerable when nailing and using such tools as handsaws and planes and while accomplishing masonry and plastering. Incumbent occasionally lifts and carries items that weigh about 50 pounds.
