About the Position: This position is with the 60th MDG Travis AFB, CA with the Directorate of Clinical Support, Nutritional Medicine Division. The David Grant USAF Medical Center at Travis Air Force Base in Fairfield, California, is the United States Air Force's largest medical center in the continental United States and serves military beneficiaries throughout eight western states.

Duties

Perform all aspects of patient tray assembly, including delivery to patients on the wards within time limits. Use established safe food handling procedures, labels and stores food properly, and complies with regulatory guidelines. Interpret diet orders and verifies patients' diet order via automated system and/or nursing staff and diet rosters. Provide information to diet technician and/or registered dietitian. Perform related tasks in conjunction with the delivery of trays to and from wards. Maintain work area in a clean and orderly condition to ensure compliance with safe food handling procedures.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position requires regular contact with children under age 18 and a favorable determination of suitability. A specific initial background check, investigation and periodic re-verification checks to obtain and maintain a determination required.
  • This position has a mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirement and is subject to annual vaccination unless exempted by a medical physician.
  • Appointment to this position is subject to a one-year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 315.
  • Employees assigned to a medical treatment facility are required to be screened for applicable immunizations or pre-existing immunity based on occupational risk, regardless of job series.
  • This position requires shift work to provide coverage on evenings, weekends, holidays, or special situations. Employee shifts are rotated on a regularly scheduled basis.
  • This position requires the successful completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination.
  • This position has a requirement to lift up to 40 lbs. in the regular performance of duties.
  • This position has a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of 5% of the time.
  • This position has been designated as "Key" and shall not be vacated during a national emergency or mobilization as doing so would seriously impair the capability of the organization to function effectively.
  • Employee may be required to wear and use personal protective equipment when needed as required and provided by the employer.
  • Incumbent may be required to report to work during periods of inclement weather.
  • Employee is required to wear protective shoes.
  • Incumbent must be able to obtain and maintain a Food Handler's Certification.

I have the ability to perform the common duties of a Food Service Worker, which includes 1) preparing cold foods such as sandwiches, salads, desserts, and beverages, 2) assembling and delivering of patient food trays, 3) obtaining and providing accurate patient food orders, AND 4) maintaining sanitized and clean work areas. I am skilled in assembling regular and therapeutic diet food items, ensuring portions are within regulatory guidance, and verify roster with automated system. I work under supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who observes tasks in progress and upon completion to ensure they are properly performed. - Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating. Regularly lifts and moves objects weighing up to forty pounds with some occasional lifting of heavier items with assistance. Regularly pushes food carts weighing 45 pounds. Working Conditions: The area is generally well lighted however is considered hot as is typical of kitchen areas in which ovens and steam constantly produce heat and humidity. The area is frequently noisy with exposure to burns, cuts, bruises, scrapes or broken bones resulting from falls or slips on wet surface, hot liquids, foods or cooking surfaces, equipment or utensils. The employee follows prescribed safety procedures and is required to wear safety shoes. Regularly pushes food carts weighing 45 pounds.
