This position is located within the U.S. National Cold Water Marine Aquaculture Center, Agricultural Research Service (ARS), Northeast Area (NEA), in Orono, ME.
The incumbent will provide research support to staff who work to solve problems of limiting production efficiency of coldwater marine aquaculture.
Duties
Assists in one or more phases of the research process by studying marine organisms. Duties involve standardized tests, procedures, routines, or operations which require a general knowledge of basic biological science;
Uses common laboratory equipment and apparatus such as microscopes, underwater cameras, etc..;
Maintains a neat and orderly work area and washes or cleans laboratory equipment;
Performs routine and recurring techniques and studies using a variety of specialized equipment;
Maintains, calibrates, and modifies equipment and automated systems used for test and evaluation procedures;
Prepares routine media, and solutions, by weighing and measuring;
Keeps detailed records of experimental data; and/or
Maintains inventory of chemicals, prepares solutions and reagents for use in laboratory, and safely disposes of waste material.
Requirements

- Males born after 12/31/1959 must be Selective Service registered or exempt
- Must be in good academic standing as defined by the agency as 2.0 grade point average.
- Complete at least 640 hrs of work experience prior to completion of degree
- Enrolled at least half-time at a qualifying educational institution
- A signed participant agreement is required for employment under Pathways
- Satisfactory Background investigation and/or fingerprint check
- Successful completion of two-year trial period

Qualifications

PATHWAYS PROGRAM ELIGIBILITY: Applicants must be currently enrolled or accepted for enrollment from a qualifying educational institution on a full or half-time basis. Applicants must be seeking a degree (diploma, certificate, etc.) and be in good academic standing (GPA of 2.0 or equivalent) throughout the duration of their program. Please see "Required Documents". The duties of the position must be related to either the student's academic or career goals that are related to the duties and responsibilities of the position (i.e., biological sciences).
GS-04:
Education: Completion of two (2) full academic years of post-high school study or an associate's degree.
