About the Position: Serves as 2nd Assistant Engineer on a diesel powered, seagoing hopper dredge and is responsible for the proper and continuous operation of all engine room machinery during assigned watch.
Duties
Serves as 2nd Assistant Engineer on a diesel powered, seagoing hopper dredge and is responsible for the proper and continuous operation of all engine room machinery during assigned watch.
Stands on regular scheduled watches in the central control monitor room of the engine room.
Make routine inspection of all engineer spaces and equipment including dredge pumps, bow thruster, steering gear and areas.
Starts stops and adjusts engine room equipment as necessary.
Observes pressure and temperature gauges and alarms and listens for sounds which indicate abnormal operating conditions.
Supervises and/or performs the operation, routine repair and maintenance of all engine room equipment and assists Chief Engineer and Assistant Chief Engineer with major repairs.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- Position requires a pre-employment physical examination and be enrolled in the medical surveillance program that requires periodic physical examinations.
- This position meets the criteria for random drug and alcohol testing under the Department of Army Drug-Free Workplace Program as supplemented by USACE ER 690-1-1218.
- Must possess a current U.S. Coast Guard license for Second Assistant Engineer of Motor Vessels, unlimited.
- Heavy lifting up to 50lbs.
- Mission Essential position.
- 1-Year Supervisory/Managerial probationary period.
- Incumbent will be in charge of the Engine Department during tie-up periods.
- Days of operation and typical daily schedules will vary based on site specific work requirements. Typical schedules may consist of 1, 2, or 3 specific shift schedules.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Second Assistant Engineer Diesel without more than normal supervision. I have the ability to perform common Engineer Diesel duties such as executing work in the operation, maintenance and repair on a marine vessel engaged in dredging operations. - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

PHYSICAL EFFORT: Must exercise moderate to heavy physical effort in handling engine room equipment. Work is usually dirty, dusty and greasy; and is performed in cramped quarters. Frequently exposed to possibility of cuts, scrapes, and infections.
WORKING CONDITIONS: Works primarily aboard a Hopper dredge, but may at times work on other Army Corps vessels, barges, or launches. Worker is frequently exposed to above normal temperatures and noise levels, confined spaces, and the danger of falling on slippery decks, etc. When assisting in repairs, there is danger of cuts, bruises, electric shock, and broken bones. Danger of drowning exists. Subject to dust, grease, and soiling of clothing and skin surfaces.
