This position is located within the Agricultural Research Service (ARS), Plains Area (PA), in Lubbock, TX.
In this position, you will assist in one or more phases of the research process by performing a variety of technical duties, in a laboratory, field, or greenhouse environment.
Duties
Prepares routine media, and solutions, by weighing and measuring constituents according to established methods.
Uses common laboratory equipment and apparatus such as autoclaves, sterilizers, centrifuges and homogenizers.
Assists in plot preparation and maintenance, plant harvesting and sample preparation as well as sample and seed sorting, or processing for analysis and storage.
Performs simple repetitive tasks incidental to the research project such as watering, fertilizing, weeding, potting, and maintaining plants.
Requirements
- Males born after 12/31/1959 must be Selective Service registered or exempt.
- Must be in good academic standing and hold a GPA of at least 2.0.
- Complete at least 640 hours of work experience prior to completion of degree.
- Enrolled at least half-time at a qualifying educational institution.
- A signed participant agreement is required for employment under Pathways.
- Satisfactory Background investigation and/or fingerprint check.
- Successful completion of two-year trial period.

Qualifications
Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement including specialized experience and/or education, as defined below.
PATHWAYS ELIGIBILITY
All applicants must be currently enrolled or accepted for enrollment as a student on at least a half-time schedule at a qualifying educational institution in a certificate, degree, or diploma program.
GS-01
Education: Enrollment in a high school diploma or general education diploma (GED) program.
GS-02
Education: Completion of high school or GED diploma.
Physical Demands
The work requires regular and recurring physical exertion such as standing for prolonged periods; walking over rough and uneven surfaces; considerable bending, stooping, reaching, or similar activities; or lifting moderately heavy (less than 50 lbs.) items.
Work Environment
The work requires moderate risks or discomforts which require special safety precautions, e.g., working around moving parts, machines, with contagious diseases or irritant chemicals. Incumbent occasionally will be required to use protective clothing or gear such as masks, gowns, goggles, gloves. Incumbent is also exposed to moderate discomforts, such as noise and adverse weather.
