The full performance, Emergency Department (ED) Intermediate Care Technician (ICT) is assigned to the Department of Veterans Affairs, Veterans Health Administration (VHA). The position serves as an advanced technician for the ED for patients who are present for treatment.

Duties

Duties include, but are not limited to: Observes patient status and keeps licensed personnel informed of any change in condition. Provides geriatric-specific care. Performs Patient Transport with or without cardiac monitor. Administration of medication. Assists licensed personnel with the delivery of care to patients with complex, specialized, and potentially life-threatening situations. Responds to medical emergencies as a part of the Rapid Response Team (RRT), Code Blue team, or medical transport team. Initiates cardiopulmonary resuscitation (BLS), use of automatic external defibrillator, and assists with airway management using bag-valve-mask (BVM), oral airway or nasal airway. Performs Cardiovascular monitoring to include: providing support, relief, and coverage as needed to central station telemetry. Recognizing lethal rhythms/arrhythmias (i.e. ventricular fibrillation and asystole) and immediately notifies appropriate staff. Collects specimens. Assists in behavioral/psychiatric situations in an emergency setting. Sets up equipment and surgical instrumentation. Performs Vital Signs and Point of Care Testing. Operates specialized medical equipment and assists with patient exams and screenings. Work Schedule: Variety of shifts, including evenings, weekends and holidays. Position Description Title/PD#: Intermediate Care Technician/PD00031A Physical Requirements: The work requires a level of physical fitness that allows for standing for extended periods, heavy lifting to position patients, and manual dexterity to perform clinical procedures. The work will require recurrent bending, lifting, stooping, standing, squatting, stretching, sitting and walking.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement. Individual Occupational Requirements (IOR): IOR must be satisfied to be further considered for the position. Positions in this series range widely in type and include support duties to medical or health personnel such as audiologists, speech pathologists, medical officers, and optometrists. Therefore, technician experience is experience that required application of the knowledge, methods, and techniques of the position to be filled. You may qualify based on your experience as described below: GS-07 Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-06 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: Administration of medication and collects specimens. Assists licensed personnel with the delivery of care to patients with complex, specialized, and potentially life-threatening situations. Responds to medical emergencies as a part of the Rapid Response Team (RRT), Code Blue team, or medical transport team. Performs Cardiovascular monitoring to include: providing support, relief, and coverage as needed to central station telemetry. Operates specialized medical equipment and assists with patient exams and screenings. OR; Education: One full year of related graduate education meets the requirements for GS-7. OR; Combination of Education and Experience: To calculate, first identify the percentage of required education you have earned (when substituting, you cannot use the first 60 semester hours that you earned). Then identify the percentage of required experience you possess. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify at the GS-07. For example, an applicant who has 9 semester hours of graduate level education (i.e. 50% of graduate education required) and 6 months of creditable specialized experience (i.e. 50% of the required experience) would equal 100% of the required experience for the position A transcript must be submitted with your application if you are basing all or part of your qualifications on education.
