Duties
Define goals to be met on major program issues, recommends a course of action, and implements the approved course of action.
Develop detailed plans, goals, and objectives for the long-range implementation, administration and change of the assigned program, and develops criteria for evaluating the effectiveness of the program.
Develop and coordinate innovative and comprehensive nationwide environmental health sciences public education and community engagement programs.
Develop programs designed to increase public understanding of NIEHS's programs and goals; and engages diverse communities throughout the country in the work of the Institute.
Coordinate environmental health sciences literacy projects, bringing together diverse stakeholders to advance the state of environmental health sciences literacy in multiple audiences.
Serve as liaison to informal learning organizations and community-based organizations to increase an understanding of the NIEHS mission.
Consult with subject-matter scientists to develop the NIEHS process for ensuring the quality and accuracy of all science education
materials; reviews educational and outreach materials.

Qualifications
BASIC REQUIREMENTS: Applicants for all grades must meet the requirements described in paragraphs A or B below:
A. You have successfully completed a degree that included or was supplemented by major study in education or in a subject-matter field appropriate to the position
OR
B. You have a combination of education and experience -- courses equivalent to a major in education, or in a subject-matter field appropriate to the position, plus appropriate experience or additional course work that provided knowledge comparable to that normally acquired through the successful completion of the 4-year course of study.
In addition, in order to qualify for an Education Outreach Specialist, 1701 at the GS-13 level, you must have 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-12 level in the Federal Service obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: developing and implementing science education programs; analyzing data to create public health education programs; Contributing to the design, creation, and review of educational materials; Identifying demographic trends and gaps relevant to scientific development programs; and Analyzing data to develop reports, strategies, and conclusions for science education programs.
