This position serves as the Mobile Equipment Servicer for the Facilities Maintenance Service (FMS) at the LTC Charles S. Kettles VAMC Ann Arbor, MI. under the supervision of the Grounds and Transportation Supervisor. The incumbent is required to work under minimum supervision and resolve problems associated with the work of the office.
Duties
Primary Duties:
This position has primary duties of servicing automotive and mobile equipment such as automobiles, trucks, buses, forklifts and bulldozers.
Knowledge:
The incumbent must have a thorough knowledge of the characteristics and use of various lubricants, cooling systems protective agents, and hydraulic compounds. Incumbent must be able to drain and change lubricants in crank cases, differentials and transmissions; to lubricate vehicles and replace oil and air filters; to check fluid levels in braking systems and power steering reservoirs.
Incumbent drains moister from air tanks, install alcohol in air systems, change oil and filters on hydraulic systems which operate hoists and tailgates.
Incumbent must be able to replace accessories such as rear view mirrors.
Incumbent must be able to rotate, replace, and repair tube and tubeless tires with plugger or hot or cold patch of all sizes.
Incumbent must be skilled in the use of a battery cell tester, a battery hydrometer, and the tools necessary to complete this an other such assignments.
Incumbent must know how to check components such as spark plugs, fan belts, tail pipes, hoses and similar items and to make replacements and adjustments.
Incumbent refers any observed need for major repairs to automotive mechanic or other appropriate worker.
Incumbent must be able to record amount of gasoline, oil, and other supplies issued; and to keep an inventory of gasoline and other supplies on hand.
Incumbent must be able to perform preventive maintenance on all vehicles and equipment. Knowledge of repair and maintenance requirements of commercial repair shops.
Ability to adjust work operations and schedules to meet emergency or changing programs on vehicle related requirements within available resources and with minimum sacrifice of quality and quantity of service provided.
Ability to communicate with personnel at all levels of responsibility and authority, Ability to convey ideas, recommendations, and guidance to others verbally and written form. Ability to plan, organize, manage, research, interpret, and apply regulations, directives, policies, and guidance. Knowledge and ability to analyze information and reports to ensure efficient and effective transportation program accomplishments. Skill in applying knowledge to plan and accomplish a variety of complex work assignments and / or to identify, analyze, and resolve issues and problems.
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 6AM to 2:30PM

Physical Requirements:
Work requires good coordination as well as manual dexterity. Physical effort is required for making repairs. Incumbent is required to bend, stoop, crawl, climb and lift heavy objects up to 50 lbs. Incumbent frequently works on top of equipment at heights of 18 feet and above the ground and underneath vehicles. Incumbent works in awkward positions when performing work in lube pits or from car racks.
Working Conditions:
Work is performed inside and outside facility where the Incumbent is exposed to all types of weather. Incumbent us exposed to a dirty, oily, greasy work environment.
