This position is located in Facility Management Service at the Togus VA Medical Center in Augusta/Togus, ME.

Duties

Major Duties: Maintains, repairs, alters and constructs interior and exterior surfaces built of a variety of block, stone, concrete and brick, working from oral instructions, blueprints, work orders, and rough sketches. Plans and lays out work to be done, selects proper tools, and determines materials to be used. Lays face and common brick, a variety of block, stone, concrete, quarry mosaic, ceramic and structural glazed tile, glass blocks and fire brick to accomplish work in accordance with accepted trade practices. Repairs and construct items such as wells, walks, chimneys, manholes, lockers, basins, and floors. Maintains roofs, drains, scuppers, and downspouts. Installs floor tiles and suspended ceilings. Mixes and applies plaster and finished plastered surfaces of interior and exterior walls and ceilings of new construction and/or repairs existing structures, including stucco. Installs metal pans and acoustical ceilings and floor tile. Performs construction, alteration or modification, repair, and replacement of items such as framework, doors, windows, screens, paneling, and interior and exterior trim Installs wood and steel joists. Performs other related duties as assigned. Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 7:30am-4:00pm Recruitment & Relocation Incentives: Not authorize Critical Skills Incentive (CSI): Not approved

PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK CONDITIONS: This position requires considerable standing, stooping and bending. Works on ladders and scaffolds which require work overhead or in stretched, cramped or awkward positions. Arm movement is considerable when nailing and using hand tools such as handsaws and planers. Occasionally lifts and carries items that weigh 50 pounds or more. Work is done inside a shop area where incumbent is subject to cuts and danger from flying splinters and chips. On occasion, there will be sawdust in the air. Works outside in all kinds of weather and is sometimes exposed to rain or very cold weather. Works on scaffolding, high ladders, or rooftops where there is a danger of falling. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualifications. For this position, the job element method is used to match what you, the applicant, can do against what the work calls for. Your knowledge, skills and abilities will be compared to the knowledge, skills and abilities (called job elements) needed for success. Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element (WG-2 and higher only; screen-outs are not applicable to WG-1).
