Duties

This Heavy Mobile Equipment Repairer position is in the Facilities Management Division, at the Clement J. Zablocki Medical Center, Milwaukee, WI. The work extends beyond operator maintenance, and involves making repairs to Heavy Mobile Equipment by removing, adjusting, or replacing defective/worn parts and components. This includes, but is not limited to: automatic and non-automatic transmissions, drive lines, hydraulic utility systems, braking systems, and starting switches. The level of work performed may also include the repair or replacement of parts such as brakes, tires, suspension components and tune-up parts. Major Duties: Performs mechanical repair work in connection with the rebuild and overhaul of various fuel and electrical assemblies/subassemblies for combustion powered heavy duty vehicles and heavy mobile equipment. Overhauls and repairs work on other medium weight gasoline and or diesel powered vehicles and equipment. Ensures that hazardous materials/waste within work area are handled/processed within operating guidelines. Insures that storage drums, and other containers housing hazardous materials/waste, are properly labeled and secured at all times and reports any deficiencies to the supervisor. Properly disposes of hazardous materials/waste used/generated at work site. Operates a pressure washer. Fills in from time to time as a truck driver, motor vehicle operator, tractor operator and work on snow removal. *Work Schedule: Full-time, Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM-4:30 PM *The position is eligible for an AWS schedule with (8) 9 hr days and (1) 8 hr day in the 2 week pay period may be available with a Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday off. *A valid State Issued Driver's License and a current Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) validated for Air Brakes is required. Pay: Competitive salary and regular salary increases When setting pay, a higher step rate of the appropriate grade may be determined after consideration of existing pay, higher or unique qualifications, or special needs of the VA (Above Minimum Rate of the Grade). Paid Time Off: 37-50 days of annual paid time offer per year (13-26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays per year). Selected applicants may qualify for credit toward annual leave accrual, based on prior [work experience] or military service experience. EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards. Your resume must demonstrate a thorough knowledge of the mechanical makeup, operation, and working relationships of heavy mobile equipment, assemblies, and parts, including such major systems as diesel, multi-fuel, and gasoline engines, automatic and manual transmissions and gear reduction systems, including those with torque converters, planetary gears, and power take offs; drive line assemblies including differentials, power dividers, and dual speed axles; brakes, electrical and electronic systems and accessories, including ignition systems, charging and starting systems, and wiring and lighting systems; carbureted and fuel injection systems; and emission control systems. Knowledge of electrical, electronic, hydraulic, pneumatic, and other non-mechanical systems which have a functional relationship and effect on the operation of mechanical systems. Thorough knowledge of hydraulic lifting, loading, turning, and positioning systems and their mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, electrical, and electronic controls. Basic knowledge of electronics sufficient to identify repair and/or replace defective components, such as sensors, diodes, and circuit boards, and they refer more complex problems to electronics mechanics. Skill in measuring, fitting, and installing components, such as pistons, valves, bearings, gears, and cylinders, to specified clearances. Knowledge of regular preventative maintenance duties such as checking the oil and air cleaner. Knowledge of the safe operation of the pressure washer. This include being knowledgeable of the hazards of high pressure washers and the cleaning solutions used. Incumbent complies with MSDS sheets and is familiar with the cleaning, solution used, if any. Physical Requirements: The work requires frequent standing, bending, reaching, stretching, climbing, and crouching. The work requires sometimes requires standing or crouching in tiring or uncomfortable positions for long periods. Work is performed on top of, under, and in tight compartments of vehicles in cramped or awkward positions. Performs strenuous work while standing, lying, or sitting and frequently lifts and carries items, unassisted, weighing up to and occasionally in excess of 40 pounds, and often exerts similar effort in pushing, pulling, and positioning parts, assemblies, and equipment. Incumbent frequently lifts and moves heavier items with the assistance of other workers or with lifting devices such as jacks, hoists, and cranes. Sometimes incumbent is required to work from ladders or work platforms at varying heights. Working Conditions: Work is performed both inside and outside. When inside, incumbent is frequently exposed to drafts, changing temperatures, and noise which is difficult to talk above. When outside, sometimes works in bad weather, in mud or snow, and in wet or icy areas. Both inside and outside, the incumbent is exposed to irritations and discomfort from dust, grease, heat, and fumes and typically work on parts and systems which are dirty, oily, or greasy. Incumbent is subject to cuts, burns, chemical irritations, bruises, electrical shock, and injuries from falls while repairing, positioning, and moving equipment. Follows prescribed safety practices and uses safety equipment such as protective ear devices, face shield, hard hats, hard-toe shoes, gloves, respirators, and protective clothing. Since exposure to hazardous materials/waste is possible, incumbent often wears protective clothing and equipment (e.g., rubber boots, coveralls, goggles, aprons, rubber gloves, respirator, etc.) as situations warrant. Some of these safety items may be uncomfortable to wear or use, and may be worn or used for long periods.
