Duties

Performs complex and specialized laboratory analysis, automated and semi-automated testing ranging in difficulty from routine to moderately complex for all disciplines to include hematology, blood bank, coagulation, serology, urinalysis, microbiology, chemistry, and specimen collection. Reports test results and consults with the supervisory and laboratory staff on additional testing that may be useful or necessary to clarify problems. Conducts quality control procedures on equipment, reagents, and products by implementing instrument, reagent, and product check systems. Ensures laboratory compliance with appropriate accrediting and regulatory agency guidelines with respect to procedure manuals, technology updates, equipment/instrumentation maintenance, quality control, and department function. Along with all other correctional institution employees, incumbent is charged with responsibility for maintaining security of the institution. The staff correctional responsibilities precede all others required by this position and are performed on a regular and recurring basis.

Qualifications

To be considered for the position, you must meet the following qualification requirements: Specialized Experience: For positions at GS-04 and above: (a) Technical medical laboratory support work such as performing laboratory tests and examinations (chemical, microbiologic, hematologic and blood banking) and preparing reports of findings or (b) technical support work in a closely related field, e.g., biological laboratory technician work, that required application of the methods and techniques for the position to be filled. OR Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree with major study or at least 24 semester hours in subjects appropriate to the position to be filled. AND Education: One full year of graduate education directly related to the field meets the requirements for GS-07. OR Experience: You must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent in difficulty and complexity to the next lower grade in that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. Some examples of this qualifying experience are: Experience in aspects of clinical laboratory sciences as they relate to the performance of laboratory analysis on human blood, tissues, and body fluids. Experience in consulting with physicians and other medical staff on a daily basis regarding patient laboratory result status. Experience in performing external proficiency testing programs to maintain accreditation of the laboratory. AND Selective Factors: Applicant must have a certification from the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP).
