Duties

responsible for all phases of cardiopulmonary rehabilitation which includes the clinical assessment and programming, and personnel administrator; Implements exercise prescriptions, safety standards and record keeping. Serve as a consultant to the Coronary Care Unit, Cardiothoracic Clinic, and ward staff as well as to any outpatient clinic or military facility requesting information about any facet of cardiopulmonary rehabilitation. Responsible for all therapeutic modalities of clinical service; ensures patients are placed in the appropriate programs by frequent chart reviews; reviews each program evaluation and statistics and makes changes where needed. Represent Brooke Army Medical Center as an expert on wellness and rehabilitation; Collaborates with the multi-disciplinary team members to affect a holistic, comprehensive rehabilitation program. Evaluate each patient admitted into the Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation Program and develops and monitors individual exercise protocols. Supervise patients during outpatient exercise sessions to ensure compliance with exercise prescription and to monitor and document cardiopulmonary response to exercise. Adapt complex physiological testing procedures to include stress test, electrocardiograms, catheterization reports, pulmonary function tests, and laboratory values for use in the course of rehabilitation. Develop a student intern and physician education program; evaluates program effectiveness by developing and implementing ongoing quality assurance monitors; assesses productivity of the Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation Program. Responsible for daily supervision, disciplinary action, leave approval and rating for all staff assigned to the Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation Clinic and administering them to all newly assigned staff and students. Supervise staff during outpatient exercise sessions to ensure compliance with exercise prescription and to monitor and document cardiopulmonary response to exercise.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • A Personnel Security Investigation is required.
  • Selectees will be required to sign a statement (Condition of Employment) consenting to seasonal influenza vaccinations or must provide a recognized exemption.
  • One-year supervisory probationary period required. A one-year probationary period is required if the selectee has not previously met this requirement.
  • This position is a Testing Designated Position subject to pre-employment screening and random drug testing. Selectees will be required to consent to participation in random drug urinalysis testing.
  • A pre-placement medical examination is required.
  • Immunization screening is required. Hepatitis B immunization is required for all positions with direct patient contact. Applicants may be required to show proof of other immunizations depending on the type of position.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Red Cross. Advanced certification (e.g., ALS) does not supersede BLS.
  • This position may require the incumbent to work weekends and/or holidays.
  • Moderate to heavy lifting up to 50 pounds is required.

Basic Requirement for Exercise Physiologist: Degree: Bachelor's or graduate (or higher level) degree with major study in an academic field related to the medical field, health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work of the position. This degree must be from an educational program accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes assessing, planning and/or implementing exercise programs for cardiopulmonary patients. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-11) Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
