About the Position: The U.S. Military Academy, West Point, NY is an academic institution located in the Hudson River Valley, 50 miles from New York City. The historic site is the oldest continuously occupied military post in America. West Point is a self-contained city with housing, a Department of Public Works, libraries, hospital, fire department, chapels, and restaurants. Employees have access to Eisenhower Hall Theater, Hudson Valley's performing arts center, and recreational facilities.
Duties
As an Instructor or Assistant Professor in the Department of Physical Education (DPE), primarily teaching Survival Swimming, Fundamentals of Personal Fitness, and Lifetime Physical Activities.
Teach and develop basic survival swimming proficiency, while challenging the aquatic ability of all classifications of swimmers.
Instruct diverse facets of the physical education program, potentially encompassing areas such as combative, boxing, and survival swimming.
Teach and demonstrate a wide range of skills and sports based on current trends, resources, instructor expertise, and cadet needs. Examples include, but are not limited to: Golf, Basketball, Skiing/Snowboarding, Scuba, Soccer, Tennis, etc.
Teach how to assess, develop, and maintain individual health and fitness as defined by the Army's Holistic Health and Fitness (H2F) system.
Communicate how to optimize performance through tailored physical training, effective nutritional fueling, recovery through sound sleep habits, and the development of performance-based psychological skills.
Serve as a sport educator in the United States Military Academy (USMA) intramural program.
Administer a variety of physical fitness tests to cadets.
Provide physical readiness training instruction during Cadet Summer Training.
Serve on USMA, United States Corps of Cadets (USCC), and DPE committees or committees assisting in administrative duties in support of the department’s mission.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- Position may include working selected weekends, evenings, and holidays.
- Appointment to this position may be subject to a one year trial period.

This is a full-time Term appointment in the excepted service not to exceed 13 months.Term appointments may be extended beyond the initial term. QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: Applicants must (a) hold a bachelor's degree or higher that included or was supplemented by major study in education or in a subject-matter field appropriate to the position, OR (b) possess a combination of education and experience -- courses equivalent to a major in education, or in a subject-matter field appropriate to the position, plus appropriate experience or additional course work that provided knowledge comparable to that normally acquired through the successful completion of the 4-year course of study described above.
SELECTIVE PLACEMENT FACTOR/KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs):
Applicants will be evaluated on the following:
1) Academic Accomplishment (Master's or Ph.D. preferred) in Physical Education or related field.
2) Demonstrated ability to perform and teach or coach a variety of basic swimming and survival swimming skill techniques.
3) Ability to teach at a collegiate level personal fitness course.
4) Demonstrated ability to teach a variety of lifetime physical activity courses.
