About the Position: This position is located at Defense Health Network Pacific Rim, San Diego, CA Directorate of Clinical Support, Clinical Nutrition.

Duties
Provides consultant services regarding clinical nutrition, diabetes, nutrition support, gerontology, oncology, obesity and weight management, pediatric, renal or sports nutritional products, policies, and procedures.
Conducts a comprehensive nutrition assessment and diagnosis using medical, biochemical, and nutritional data for patients identified at nutritional risk.
Evaluates the effectiveness and measures progress toward outcomes of medical nutrition therapy interventions.
Serves as an education resource, instructing medical staff within the medical center on the current research and practice.
Develops and implements an individualized plan for nutrition intervention in accordance with the patient's medical program goals and objectives, nutrition prescription, and self-management training.
Provides appropriate documentation that summarizes the nutrition care plan in the patient's medical record, including nutrition assessment, diagnosis, plan, implementation, and progress toward goals.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Secret security clearance or access for the duration of employment.
- This position requires the completion of an Occupational Health pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter.
- This position has been designated "Mission Essential". In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.
- Appointment to this position is subject to a one-year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 315.
- This position requires Basic Life Support training certification from, or in accordance with, the American Heart Association and American Red Cross. Current Advanced Life Support or other advanced certification does not supersede BLS completion.
- This position is subject to screening and update of required immunizations unless exempted for medical or administrative reasons. Hepatitis B immunization is required for all positions with direct patient contact.
- This position has a mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirement and is subject to annual vaccination.
- This position has a requirement to lift up to 40lbs. in the regular performance of duties.
- This position requires a current, active, full, and unrestricted national license or registration as a Dietitian through the Commission on Dietetic Registration.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Basic Requirement:
Degree: Bachelor's or graduate (or higher level) degree in the field of dietetics, food, nutrition, food service management, institution management, or related science. The curriculum must have been in accordance with the qualifying requirements established by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND) (formerly American Dietetic Association (ADA) prior to January 1, 2012) in effect at the time of graduation. The educational program must have been accredited by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND), or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained.
OR
Completion of a coordinated undergraduate program, internship, or other clinical component approved by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND) (formerly American Dietetic Association (ADA)) for dietitians or nutritionists.
OR
Professional registration as a Registered Dietitian (RD) or Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN).Exemption: You are exempt from the basic requirements above if you are a current federal employee occupying a position in the 0630 occupational series and have been continuously employed in this occupational series since September 27, 2017 or before. Note: You will be required to provide appropriate documentation to the respective Human Resources Office to validate your status.
In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below:
Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: (1) providing patient care in medical nutrition therapy through nutrition assessment, reviewing or revising nutrition therapy care plans and; (2) educating patients and/or staff nutrition topics. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-11).
Education
Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
