The Medical Instrument Technician (Vascular) Supervisor within the Surgery Service Line assumes full administrative and professional responsibility for planning and directing the work of subordinated technicians in the vascular diagnostic area. The Incumbent works closely with the technologists, vascular surgeons, clinicians, and clerical staff to assure optimum quality control, efficient coordination of activities, high quality diagnostic exam results, and patient satisfaction.

Duties

The Medical Instrument Technician (Vascular) Supervisor demonstrates a knowledge base of cross-sectional anatomy and physiology as well as medical terminology in order to perform procedures with a high degree of accuracy. The MIT works closely with the technologists, vascular surgeons, clinicians, and clerical staff to assure optimum quality control, efficient coordination of activities, high quality diagnostic exam results, and patient satisfaction. Duties for the Medical Instrument Technician (Vascular) Supervisor include but are not limited to: Training/Administrative Responsibilities: Work with the Chief, Vascular Lab and other administrative personnel to devise and maintain a protocol and procedure manual regarding the function of the Vascular Laboratory and make revisions and additions when necessary. Establish and/or maintain filing systems for all documentation necessary to achieve and maintain Vascular Testing accreditation with the Intersocietal Accreditation Commission Assign and evaluate the work of subordinate staff. Provide instruction and training to new staff and sonography students. Interview candidates for positions (which includes recommending selections, advancements, promotions) Develops and maintains a schedule for vascular ultrasound technologists. Works with vendors to schedule in-service sessions on new equipment and/or software being implemented in the vascular laboratory. Attend weekly vascular conference and vascular staff meetings. Instructs and advises students, residents, fellows, and non-vascular technicians on the performance, interpretation, and limitations of non-invasive tests performed in the vascular laboratory. Assures that vascular diagnostic procedure rooms are stocked with necessary supplies at all times with special attention to emergent equipment and supplies. Works with the Chief, Vascular Lab, Business Manager and other administrative officials to design and implement training sessions to maintain standard of care and best practices within the Vascular Laboratory. Patient Care/Clinical Responsibilities: Perform routine and specialized non-invasive vascular ultrasound tests and studies. Capture necessary images and documentation as it pertains to noninvasive vascular tests and studies. Timely documentation of preliminary reports from non-invasive vascular ultrasound test findings in the electronic patient record. Recognize, document and communicate with appropriate priority both critical (abnormalities and anomalies) and non-critical test findings to referring provider(s). Responsible for ordering and maintaining adequate supplies in the Vascular Lab. Responsible for routine diagnostic equipment cleaning and care. Recognizes equipment malfunction and performs basic troubleshooting. Communicates with bioengineering staff, equipment sales representatives and equipment service personnel to restore optimal function of the diagnostic equipment, as needed. Respond to patient questions and concerns regarding exam procedures and process. Complete all paperwork and electronic forms (e.g., consults and encounters) associated with technical procedures. Serve as one of the main points of contact and liaison between the vascular laboratory and all internal and external customers. Review consults for timely and proper scheduling. Practice all necessary patient and staff safety, infection control, and contact precaution processes and procedures. Performs other duties as assigned. Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. English Language Proficiency: Medical Instrument Technicians must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with chapter 2, section D, paragraph 5a, this part. Certification: Registration by Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI) as a Registered Vascular Sonographer (RVS)or by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) as a Registered Vascular Technologist (RVT) is highly desirable. Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certifications are also desirable for employees at this level. May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). Grade Determinations: Medical Instrument Technician (Vascular)Supervisor GS-10 Experience: At least 1 year of experience comparable to the next lower grade level, (GS-9) which is directly related to the duties of the position to be filled, and must fully meet the KSAs at that level. Preferred Experience: Individuals in this assignment assume full administrative and professional responsibility for planning and directing the work of subordinate technicians. Typically these duties include assigning and evaluating the work of subordinate staff; providing Vascular Sonography services in more complex cases; reviewing and making recommendations regarding new and emerging procedures; providing instruction and training to new staff; interviewing candidates for positions; recommending selections, advancements, promotions; evaluating performance; taking disciplinary action when necessary; and identifying educational or training needs. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following technical KSAs and the potential to acquire the assignment specific KSAs designated by an asterisk: (b) Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: KSAs 1, 2, and 3 are appropriate for all positions at this level. KSAs 4 and 5 are to be used in accordance with their appropriateness for the specific assignment. 1. Advanced knowledge of the most complex and non-standard treatment and examination procedures and techniques. *2. Ability to plan and assist in the establishment of a completely integrated treatment and examination program. *3. Ability to evaluate new products and equipment and make recommendations concerning developments which would improve operations. *4. Ability to manage the fiscal matters of the functions supervised (which would include fund controls, contracts, and equipment expenditures), forecast resource and equipment needs, and administer the allocated budget. *5. Knowledge of and ability to provide the full range of supervisory duties which would include responsibility for assignment of work to be performed; performance evaluation; selection of staff; and recommendation of awards, advancements, and, when appropriate, disciplinary actions.
