Duties

These positions serve as Park Rangers for the Color Country District Works with the public to provide information. Gathers and analyzes data related to recreation resources to recognize prominent trends. Presents a positive image of the BLM by conducting visitor contact in a courteous, professional and friendly manner. Assists with monitoring Special Recreation Permits (SRPs), ensuring compliance, issuing permits and providing information Oversees fee collection activities, maintains fee accounting records and submits deposits. Develops and maintains interpretive materials and educational displays. Prepares correspondence to respond to visitor inquiries (to include walk-ins), and answers telephones. Performs day to day operations at a visitor center or customer use area that provide facilities such as campgrounds, picnic areas, trails, and/or other specialized recreation opportunities. Conducts patrols and monitors visitor use activities in the field and campgrounds.

Qualifications

Selective Placement Factors: This position requires a special qualification that has been determined to be essential to perform the duties and will be used as a screen out element. Those who do not provide evidence they possess the following selective factor(s) will be rated not qualified: 1) An applicant appointed to this position must possess (or obtain within 30 days of entrance on duty) and maintain a valid state driver's license while employed in this position. In order to be rated as qualified for this position, we must be able to determine that you meet the qualification requirements - please be sure to include this information in your resume. No assumptions will be made about your experience. To qualify at the GS-05 level you must meet the following: Specialized Experience: Applicants must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-04 level comparable in difficulty and complexity to perform the duties of a Park Ranger. Qualifying specialized experience includes: working at recreation facilities or the front desk to provide public information; conducting recreation management work in a field office, recreation or conservation area; using computer systems to retrieve input, manipulate data, write and run reports; and assisting in monitoring condition of facilities, sites or natural or cultural resources. OR Education: To qualify based on education you must have four (4) years (120 semester hours) of education above high school, leading to a bachelor's degree in a related field of study. OR Combination of Education and Experience: You may meet qualifications requirement for this position with an equivalent combination of specialized experience and appropriate undergraduate education. Undergraduate level education must demonstrate the difficulty and complexity to do the work of this position. To qualify at the GS-07 level you must meet the following: Specialized Experience: Applicants must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-05 level comparable in difficulty and complexity to perform the duties of a Park Ranger. Qualifying specialized experience includes: completing data collection or analysis work; planning day to day operation of a recreation area providing such facilities as camping or picnic areas; advising visitors concerning safety, fire prevention or proper and authorized uses of recreational facilities; and meeting with visitors to provide information concerning points of interest, travel routes, historical or natural features or park activities. OR Education: To qualify based on education you must have one (1) full year (18 semester hours) of graduate-level education in a related field of study. OR Combination of Education and Experience: You may meet qualifications requirement for this position with an equivalent combination of specialized experience and appropriate graduate education. Graduate level education must demonstrate the difficulty and complexity to do the work of this position. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. You must meet all qualification requirements within 30 days of the closing date of the announcement. Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade requirement in accordance with 5 CFR 300.604. If you are a current Federal employee in the General Schedule (GS) pay plan and applying for a promotion opportunity, you must have completed a minimum of 52 weeks at the next lower grade level. Physical Demands: The work is performed mostly outdoors in rugged terrain; to include very steep, wet, muddy, rough, uneven or rocky surfaces. The position requires physical exertion such as, but not limited to, driving over unpaved roads, walking over rough terrain or inclines, standing for long periods of time, bending, crouching and stooping, digging, hiking, lifting, biking, stretching, reaching, or similar activities. Work may involve early morning hours, night hours, or daytime hours and may require working on holidays. It can require carrying heavy backpacks, tools, rescue equipment, or other loads. Work Environment: Most work will be performed out of doors, in all types of weather conditions, terrain, and elevations. Work may take place in an extremely remote environment and may require primitive camping and living skills for upwards of two weeks in duration. Indoor duties are performed in a normal office setting.
