About the Position: The Walla Walla District US Army Corps of Engineers is comprised of motivated and talented employees providing the very best engineering services for communities in the Pacific Northwest. The District helps manage local water resources for navigation, flood damage reduction, disaster assistance, hydroelectric power generation, and other natural and heritage areas.
Duties
Serve as the Senior Architect in NWW with responsibility for creating, managing, coordinating, reviewing, and providing architectural technical advice relative to all aspects of design, construction, operations and maintenance for Civil Works.
Lead and perform design of architectural systems both conceptual and construction document-level, for structures such as office buildings, hydroelectric projects, fish hatcheries, fish transport facilities, storage warehouses, and specialized shops.
Develop contract plans and specifications in accordance with USACE regulations, State and Federal building codes, industry standards, and design memorandums.
Provide expertise in analysis of architectural designs with emphasis on code compliance.
Perform site visit inspections and ensures adequacy of architectural features and compliance with existing policy and construction requirements, to include reporting results.
Utilizes a full suite of software tools such as Computer Aided Design and Drafting (CAD), Building Information Modeling (BIM), Autodesk Revit, Bentley MicroStation, ProjectWise, Adobe, Bluebeam Revu, SpecsIntact.
Ensures completion of all aspects of architectural design such as code/regulatory compliance, sustainability, air barriers, core/shell design including Life Safety, commissioning, roofing systems, vertical transportation, and historic preservation.
Serve as a technical lead on complex projects, typically architectural in nature and involving multiple disciplines.
Perform District quality control reviews, independent technical reviews, and agency technical reviews, and participates in value engineering studies, some of which support other Districts and Divisions.
Review architectural design memoranda, specifications, and working drawings prepared by engineers of equal or lower grade, A/E firms, and personnel from other Districts.
Mentors and assists junior architects in their career development and technical knowledge.
Assists the section chief with assessing strengths and weaknesses and provides leadership to the team in exploring alternatives and determining what improvements can be made (e.g., in work methods, processes and procedures).
Monitors and reports on the status and progress of work checking on work in progress and reviewing completed work to see that the supervisors’ instructions on work priorities, methods, deadlines, and quality have been met.

Basic Requirement for an Architect
A. Degree: Bachelor's degree (or higher degree) in architecture or in a related field that included 60 semester hours of course work in architecture or related disciplines of which at least (1) 30 semester hours were in architectural design, and (2) 6 semester hours were in each of the following: structural technology, properties of materials and methods of construction, and environmental control systems.
OR
B. Combination of Education and Experience: College-level education, training, and/or technical experience that furnished (1) a thorough knowledge of the arts and sciences underlying professional architecture, and (2) a good understanding, both theoretical and practical, of the architectural principles, methods, and techniques and their applications to the design and construction or improvement of buildings. The adequacy of such background must be demonstrated by at least one of the following: (1) Related Curriculum -Degree in architectural engineering provided the completed course work in architectural engineering provided knowledge, skills, and abilities substantially equivalent to those provided in the courses specified in statement A above, or (2) Experience: 1 year of experience in an architect's office or in architectural work for each year short of graduation from a program of study in architecture. In the absence of any college courses, 5 years of such experience is required. This experience must have demonstrated that you have acquired a thorough knowledge of the fundamental principles and theories of professional architecture.
In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below:
Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes reviewing designs, plans and specifications to ensure conformance with objectives AND developing products such as designs, analyses, plans and specifications, studies, and producing reports for a variety of multi-discipline project to include: buildings, hydropower facilities, dams, navigation locks, spillways, docks and waterfront structures. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service GS-12.
Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone-no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
This position has selective placement factor which must be met prior to employment and for continued employment. This position requires a Professional Architect Registration. You must upload documentation of registration to be considered for this position.
