As Scientific Diversity Advisor, your work will involve providing guidance on diversity and inclusion, leading efforts to enhance overall diversity and inclusion to include serving as a technical authority on health disparities and equity regarding the center's basic, clinical, and translational research programs. You will help develop an inclusive and equitable culture and program that provides employment and scientific research support for all individuals.

Duties

Serve as a technical expert and authority on workforce diversity and inclusion issues related to internal and external activities. Responsible for leading a variety of programs designed to address diversity and inclusion issues, with a specific focus on disparity issues related to the underrepresentation of racial, ethnic, and other specific groups. Coordinate activities and serves as principal advisor and negotiates recommendations and actions on special initiatives/projects involving diversity and inclusion issues. Evaluate and provide recommendations to scientists, clinicians, and researchers that address significant and persistent differences in disease rates and health outcomes between people of differing socioeconomic status. Develops and presents reports/presentations to higher-level management on health disparities in research, and makes recommendations on solutions to improve outcomes. Serves as a recognized authority providing advice and consultation on critical problems, which require creativity in generating new approaches for enhancing diversity and inclusion both internally and externally.

Qualifications

You must meet at least of the one following basic Office of Personnel Management prescribed occupational series requirements (GS-0101, GS-0601) described in the following two questions. You do not need to meet the requirements for both occupational series. All education, unless completed outside of the U.S., must be from an educational program from an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the education was completed. FOR THE GS-101 SERIES: To qualify for the Scientific Diversity Advisor position in the GS-101 Social Science Series, you must: A. have a bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree in the behavioral or social sciences, or related disciplines appropriate to this position; OR B. have a combination of education and experience that provided me with the knowledge of one or more of the behavioral or social sciences equivalent to a major in the field; OR C. have four years of appropriate experience demonstrating that I have acquired knowledge of one or more of the behavioral or social sciences equivalent to a major in the field. FOR THE GS-601 SERIES: To qualify for the Scientific Diversity Advisor in the GS-601 General Medical and Healthcare Series, you must have a bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree with a major study in an academic field related to the medical field, health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work of this position. Specialized Experience In addition, to qualify, you must have 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-13 level in the Federal Government obtained in either the private or public sector, which includes planning, implementing, and evaluating scientific diversity initiatives conducted by an organization. This specialized experience includes the following types of tasks: 1) Assessing scientific diversity practices and guiding leadership to enhance inclusion/collaboration across a research program; 2) Recommending policies/programs to promote scientific diversity and an equitable culture across a research organization; and 3) Developing strategies (e.g., training, policies, or other activities) to promote scientific diversity and an equitable culture and to reduce health disparities (e.g., social, economic) affecting biomedical or behavioral research. You will receive credit for all experience material to the position, including experience gained in religious, civic, welfare, service, and organizational activities, regardless of whether you received pay.
