Duties common to a Physical Science Technician, GS-1311-06 are:
These positions work in a variety of program areas such as Water Resources, GIS, Caves, Geology, Air and/or Water Quality, Climate, Soundscapes, etc. Duties will vary by location.
Assists with and/or implements established natural resource management projects (e.g., field examinations, field surveys, inventories, etc.) related to one or more of the physical sciences.
Collects and organizes field data following instructions and standardized procedures. Performs routine and recurring testing of collected samples.
Monitors and evaluates conditions in assigned program area. Evaluates observed conditions and problems and makes preliminary determinations on the cause of problems noted.
Utilizes a variety of computer programs to compile, reduce, store, retrieve, analyze, and report data and other resource management information, including natural science research and long-term monitoring projects.
Qualifications
All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-11/29/2024-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement.
Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST clearly indicate the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, starting and ending dates of employment (month/year), and the resume must reflect full and/or part-time or total number of hours worked (i.e., work 40+ hours a week, rather than indicating full-time). If part-time, the hours must be annotated to be able to pro-rate the amount of qualified specialized experience.
To qualify for this position at the GS-06 grade level, you must possess at least one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement:
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-05 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized experience is experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to successfully perform the duties of this position. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include work in the fields of geophysics, chemistry, hydrology, engineering, geology, and metallurgy, assisting with natural resources research projects; assisting with compiling and analyzing scientific data into for physical sciences research or natural resource-based studies or reports; operating complex sampling, monitoring, and laboratory equipment; assisting with collecting and analyzing environmental monitoring data such as water quality and quantity, atmospheric chemistry or air quality; and assisting with setting-up and managing remote environmental monitoring equipment such as weather stations and water-quality instruments, or using computer programs such as databases to compile, store, retrieve, analyze and report resource management data. Experience as a laboratory mechanic or in a trade or craft may be credited as specialized experience when the work was performed in close association with physical scientists or other technical personnel and provided intensive knowledge of appropriate scientific principles, methods, techniques, and precedents. EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least one full year of graduate education in an accredited educational institution (18 semester hour or 27 quarter hours) directly related to this position in an appropriate field of physical science, such as geology, geoscience, geophysics, earth science, hydrology or other directly related fields. YOU MUST PROVIDE TRANSCRIPTS. -OR-
Successful completion of a combination of directly related education and specialized experience described above which would qualify me for this position. For example, I have 6 months of specialized experience (50% of the experience requirements for this position and grade level) combined with 9 semester hours of graduate education, as outlined above (50% of the education required to qualify), directly related to this position. YOU MUST PROVIDE TRANSCRIPTS.

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet qualification requirements, you must show that your education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
