The Laborer performs various manual labor tasks that require heavy physical effort to maintain the grounds and facility in Facilities Management Service for the Jack C. Montgomery VAMC. The work includes operating large complex riding equipment, hydraulic and mechanical devices in areas that require constant attention to working space and environment.
Duties
Duties include but are not limited to the following tasks:
Maintaining grounds, maintenance on grades or slopes, using manual equipment to fill holes, rake leaves, or dig ditches.
Operates of various controls and levers to maneuver equipment, and lift/lower, adjust, engage/disengage components or attached devices.
Operates farm tractors/Kubotas with various attachments.
Uses simple powered equipment such as push lawn mowers, blowers, edgers, trimmers, etc. to maintain grounds.
Responsible for the entire job assigned to them with minimal instruction or supervisory input.
Plans their work.
Obtains assistance for lifting heavy objects and maintaining an understanding uses of the appropriate equipment or safety devices when lifting or moving very heavy objects.
Uses safety equipment when needed or required.
Performs a variety of lifting and moving moderately heavy objects such as furniture and equipment by hand, hand truck or dolly.
Maintains consistent communication with their supervisor, and keep their supervisor advised of the operational status of all the equipment being used in completion of duties.
Notifies supervisor of unusual, unexpected, and/ or safety related concerns as soon as possible.

Physical Requirements: This position requires the incumbent to push and lift items weighing more than 100-lbs daily. These items will be lifted with the assistance from other co-workers. Most of the work required for this position involves twisting, climbing, crawling, lifting, bending, crouching, leaning, stretching, sitting, standing, stooping, and carrying up and down stairs and on irregular terrain in extreme temperatures from -20 degree wind chills to 120 degree heat index. Safety equipment is available and will be issued to the incumbent in order to minimize the possibility of injury.
Working Conditions:
A majority of the incumbent's work-related duties will be performed outside. The employee is subject to environmental discomforts including heat, rain, cold, mud, wind, dirt, and dust, wind chill factors down to -20 and heat indexes in excess of 120. Most work is performed on irregular terrain. The incumbents work is performed in areas where pesticides, insecticides, and fertilizers have been applied. He/ She may be exposed to unpleasant odors and discarded bio waste including blood and human body parts. Personal protective equipment and safety equipment is available for the incumbent.
