Duties

Duties include: Respond to calls regarding wildlife-caused traffic jams (e.g., bear jam) along roadways. Take necessary actions to manage the human-wildlife interface and protect visitors and resources by successfully reading animal behavior, specifically black and grizzly bear behavior, and implementing proper hazing/aversive conditioning techniques to move bears off roads/out of developed areas. Provide visitors with information about bear ecology and behavior, how to stay safe in bear country, and ethical wildlife viewing techniques. Work independently, both in front-country and back-country settings, around potentially dangerous wildlife such as grizzly bears, black bears, mountain lions, bison, and moose. Patrol public use areas, such as campgrounds and picnic areas, to look for and secure unattended bear attractants as well as educate visitors about proper food storage techniques. Collect and enter data into Microsoft Access and/or Excel databases. May assist biologists with the trapping and immobilization of bears. Post closures and other warnings signs, which may include carrying and installing signposts in the ground over an expansive area. Retrieve dead animals such as deer, pronghorn, and elk from road corridors or developed areas. At the GS-07 grade level, incumbent/s will be in a seasonal lead role and will provide on-the job training, assistance, mentoring, and direction to employees, interns, and volunteers. Physical Demands: The work requires prolonged standing, walking over uneven ground, and recurring bending, reaching, lifting, and carrying of heavy or awkward items. Some duties may also require strenuous activity such as lifting and carrying at high altitudes, and over rugged, precipitous, and sometimes slippery or unstable terrain. Many hours will be spent standing in traffic and in the proximity to potentially dangerous wildlife. Work will be performed in inclement weather. Some office work is required. Working Conditions: The majority of work is performed outdoors under a range of environmental conditions, including adverse weather and exposure to potentially dangerous wildlife. The hazardous nature of work requires that protective equipment (bear spray, safety vest, sun hat, etc.) be worn. Work will be performed along roadsides, in front country campgrounds and picnic areas, and on high use backcountry trails and/or backcountry campgrounds. Qualifications

All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-11/27/2024-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement. Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST clearly indicate the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, starting and ending dates of employment (month/year), and the resume must reflect full and/or part-time or total number of hours worked (i.e., work 40+ hours a week, rather than indicating full-time). If part-time, the hours must be annotated to be able to pro-rate the amount of qualified specialized experience. SELECTIVE FACTOR (GS-07 only): This position responds to calls regarding wildlife jams along roadways and in developed area and being able to interpret different grizzly and black bear behavioral cues to determine if, when, and how to haze/aversively condition bears in human developed areas to avoid human-bear conflict is required at the GS-07 grade level. Hazing/aversive conditioning techniques include, but are not limited to, vehicle threat pressure, human threat pressure, auditory deterrents, and contact projectiles. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: In addition to the mandatory requirements listed above for GS-07 applicants, to qualify for this position, all GS-05 and GS-07 applicants must demonstrate that you possess either the specialized experience and/or the education as described below. To qualify for this position at the GS-05 grade level, you must possess at least one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement: EXPERIENCE - At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-04 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). Specialized experience is experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to successfully perform the duties of this position. Examples of specialized experience include, but are not limited to: Park Guide or tour leader; environmental educator or teacher; law enforcement or investigative work; archeological or historical preservation research work; forestry and/or fire management work in a park, recreation, or conservation area; management, assistant, or program specialist work involving the development and implementation of policy related to protection, conservation, or management of park areas or similar operations; or other similar work. You must include hours per week worked in your resume to receive credit for experience. -OR-EDUCATION - Successful completion of at least four years of education above high school (120 semester hours or 180 quarter hours) leading to a bachelor's degree with major study or 24 semester hours of course work in a related field. (Related fields of study include natural resource management, natural sciences, earth sciences, history, archaeology, anthropology, park and recreation management, law enforcement/police science, social sciences, museum sciences, business administration, public administration, behavioral sciences, sociology, or other closely related subjects pertinent to the management and protection of natural and cultural resources.). You must include transcripts to receive credit for education. -OR-Successful completion of a combination of education and experience as described above. (One year of graduate education is 18 semester hours or 27 quarter hours).
