Click on "Learn more about this agency" button below to view Eligibilities being considered and other IMPORTANT information. The primary purpose of this position is to inspect, maintain, modify, troubleshoot, repair, overhaul, and test aircraft fuel distribution systems.

Duties

- Receives work document(s) or oral instructions regarding problem with aircraft fuel system. - Troubleshoots integral fuel tanks, using leak path analysis and other test procedures such as pressure checks, vacuum checks, dye injection checks, helium and argon gas checks, etc., to determine the source of fuel leaks. - Troubleshoots fuel cells to determine location of leaks. - Accomplishes modifications and prepares components for storage or shipment. - In performing duties uses a variety of common hand tools, combustible and toxic gas indicators, torque wrenches, leak detectors, pressure gauges, manometers, powered tools such as drills and pneumatic wrenches; also, operates AGE such as blowers, filters, vacuum cleaners, heaters, air conditioners, fire extinguishers, etc. - Utilizes safety practices and procedures following established safety rules and regulations and maintains a safe and clean work area.

  • The physical requirements of this position as determined by the manager are: The work requires moderate to strenuous effort. Sits, stands, lifts equipment weighing 20 pounds and occasionally items weighing up to 60 pounds,
  • which may include heavy lifting up to 79 pounds with help from lifting equipment or other workers. Pushes heavy jacks and test stands, stoops, bends, stretches, and works in cramped, tiring, and uncomfortable positions.
  • Subject to high intensity and higher frequency sounds that impose a physical burden.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a Secret Clearance.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the quality level of experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards Handbook X-118C. QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C for the WG-8200, Fluid Systems Maintenance Group . Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most blue-collar positions, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time. The screen out element for this position is the ability to do the work of Aircraft Pneudraulic Systems Mechanic without more than normal supervision. JOB ELEMENTS: Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas: 1. Knowledge of hydraulic and pneumatic principles, such as operation, capabilities and limitations of aircraft pneudraulic systems; the physical laws governing the behavior of fluids (liquids and gases); basic electrical and mechanical principles; aircraft pneudraulic systems and pneudraulic equipment used in maintaining and checking aircraft pneudraulic equipment such as test stands and hydraulic jacks; and troubleshooting procedures designed to isolate malfunctions in aircraft pneudraulic systems. 2. Knowledge of safety and security requirements as outlined in applicable standards, regulations and technical orders. 3. Ability to install aircraft pneudraulic systems, equipment or accessories and clean work area and/or job site upon completion of work. 4. Ability to follow oral and written instructions, read and interpret a variety of technical data and maintain knowledge of USAF Technical Order Program and its procedures. 5. Ability to overhaul, repair, fabricate, troubleshoot, test and calibrate aircraft pneudraulic equipment. 6. Skill in use of standard hand and power tools and a variety of test and measurement equipment and maintain knowledge of tool, equipment and materials accounting and security. PHYSICAL EFFORT: The work requires moderate to strenuous effort. Sits, stands, lifts equipment weighing 20 pounds and occasionally items weighing up to 60 pounds, which may include heavy lifting up to 79 pounds with help from lifting equipment or other workers. WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is performed in hanger areas, outdoors, in parked aircraft, around machinery with moving parts, around moving objects or vehicles, on ladders or scaffolding and sometimes in hazardous noise areas. Exposed to extremes in heat, cold, and inclement weather. Exposed to toxic fumes, dirt, grease, and aircraft fluids, oil, and hydraulic fluids. Employee is in danger of injury by: fluids subject to high pressures (9,000-10,000 pounds per square inch); falling from aircraft, work stands, or slips on oily floors; falling objects, or cockpits containing explosive devices; cuts, shocks, strains, or skin and eye irritations; and high intensity and higher frequency sound waves. PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
