Employee will be assigned to the Emergency Department, Southern Arizona VA Health Care System, Tucson, AZ, performing ongoing patient care duties in the Emergency Department and assisting with or performing other related technical health care procedures under the supervision of the Emergency Department Physicians as competency is demonstrated and documented.

NOTE: This is a TEMPORARY appointment (not-to-exceed 11/30/2025). This appointment may be renewed for additional service in accordance with Agency needs for 1 additional year. Temporary positions offer health insurance (if the employee is expected to work at least 130 hours per month for at least 90 days) but do not offer life insurance or retirement benefits and may be terminated at any time before the expiration date. The appointment to a Temporary position does not confer eligibility for promotion or reassignment to other positions or the ability to be non-competitively converted to permanent employment.
Duties include, but may not be limited to the following:
Provides assessment and management of ambulatory patients seen in the Emergency Department.
Evaluates patients for emergency medical conditions, ordering appropriate diagnostic studies and performing a wide range of treatment procedures under the direction of the supervising physician.
Assists in behavioral/psychiatric situations to include crisis intervention, management of aggressive or suicidal psychiatric patients, and one-to-one observations.
Assists Emergency Department Physicians with complex, specialized, and potentially life threatening procedures.
Performs airway management using Bilevel Positive Airway Pressure (BIPAP) and advanced airway techniques.
Operates specialized medical equipment such as defibrillators, electrocardiographs, and oxygen apparatus
Performs additional duties include dressing changes, wound management, suture removal, repair of simple lacerations, foley catheters insertion, splint, binder and bandage applications, and performance of tracheotomy care.
Performs specimen collection, preparation and transfer to the lab for processing of blood, tissue, urine, stool and sputum.
Responds to medical emergencies on the facility grounds, and sometimes encounters situations which may be life threatening as part of the Rapid Response Team (RRT) as assigned.
Conducts or assists with the training of personnel in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), basic, and advanced emergency medical care techniques if appropriately trained and qualified.
Conducts or assists with stand-downs, community health programs, blood pressure and glucose screenings, flu immunizations, etc.
Transports monitored and unmonitored patients to diagnostic procedures and/or inpatient units.
Performs triage duties as assigned.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Work Schedule: Monday through Friday; Shifts vary and will be discussed during interview.

Qualifications
ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY: In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), No person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. You must be proficient in basic written and spoken English in order to meet the requirements of this position.
SELECTIVE PLACEMENT FACTOR (SCREEN-OUT) - A Selective Placement Factor (SPF) has been identified for this position. Selective Placement Factors (SPF) are a prerequisite to appointment and represent minimum requirements for the position. Applicants who do not meet the SPF are ineligible for further consideration.
Must possess and maintain current Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Certification. (COPIES OF CERTIFICATIONS REQUIRED to receive credit for further consideration).
In addition to the English Language Proficiency and Selective Placement Factor above, to qualify for this position at the GS-07 grade level, you must meet one of the following:
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: In addition to meeting the above requirements, applicants must possess one (1) year of specialized experience that equipped them with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of this position, and that is typically in or related to the work of this position. To be creditable, this experience must have been equivalent to at least the GS-6 grade level in the Federal Service. Positions in this series range widely in type and include support duties to medical or health personnel such as audiologists, speech pathologists, medical officers, and optometrists. Therefore, technician experience is experience that required application of the knowledge, methods, and techniques of the position to be filled. Specialized experience includes: evaluating patients for emergency medical conditions; performing a wide range of treatment procedures; performing airway management using advanced airway techniques; operating specialized medical equipment (i.e., defibrillators, electrocardiographs, and oxygen apparatus); performing wound management; and documenting all actions, assessments, diagnostics, and procedures in the medical record.

SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR EXPERIENCE (Transcript Required): Successful completion of one (1) full year of graduate education directly related to the work of the position meets the requirements for GS-7. This education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university.

COMBINING EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE (Transcript Required): Combination of successfully completed graduate education and experience may be used to meet total qualification requirements.

IMPORTANT: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. All experience listed on your resume must include the month and year start/end dates. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Physical Requirements: The work involves extended periods of heavy moving and lifting of patients. Generally, the work requires recurring bending, lifting, stooping, stretching, and positioning of patients.
