Duties
If selected for this position, you will serve as a Senior Legal Assistant (OA) for OCDETF for the United States Attorney's Office (USAO), Northern District of Illinois. Typical work assignments will include:
Provides expert advice on complex organized crime and drug investigations and prosecutions.
Serves as a legal assistance subject matter expert and provides training and guidance to other support staff.
Maintains current knowledge of regulations, laws applicable to domestic and international drug trafficking and associated organized crime.
Provides a variety of direct legal support to one or more AUSAs.
Prepares a wide variety of legal documents, many of which are voluminous and complex in format.
Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as your training and experience progress.
Requirements
- You must be a U.S. Citizen or National.
- Initial appointment is conditioned upon a satisfactory pre-employment adjudication. This includes fingerprint, credit and tax checks, and drug testing. Continued employment is subject to a favorable adjudication of a background investigation
- You must be registered for Selective Service, if applicable.

Qualifications
GS-8: To be eligible at the GS-8 level, you must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-7 level.
Specialized experience is defined as experience supporting attorneys, preparing and processing a variety of technical legal documents which are characteristically voluminous and complex in format (e.g. pleadings, stipulations, motions, briefs, affidavits, complaints, orders and subpoenas); obtaining information from files, law enforcement agencies, or other sources; conducting factual and legal research and providing requested information to attorneys; aiding in the preparation and organization of evidence for use in trial.
To be qualified, you must type at least 40 words per minute based on a 5 minute sample with three or fewer errors. (A typing test may later be required.)
